On the 5th floor of a building in downtown DC.  It shook badly enough that we dove under desks.

i believe diving under a desk in an earthquake is the best way to get killed. if a ceiling tile drops, sure, you are protected - but that most likely would not kill you. where as if the whole ceiling comes down, it will crush the desk, and you. if you sit next to something solid, it usually wont get crushed 100%, leaving an air pocket next to it. i believe some refer to them as "triangles of life" because **** falls on top and the other side hits the floor, leaving a triangle.

Been a great number of years since I've been in an earthquake prone area, but never thought of that.

We were taught in school to get under desks. Was this a population control measure?

when I was a kid we were taught to get under our desks in the event of nuclear attack...think that would have helped much?

I live between nuclear waste to the north and nerve/chemical munitions to the south but felt nothing. 'course, I live in beautiful washington state. You know, the state nicknamed the evergreen state because of all conifers? Except here in the desert part which is left out of the tourist brochures.

Yeah, I'm in Baltimore and we were evacuated for about 30 minutes.
Any damage to buildings in that area? 
Not that I know of, beyond things that were broken if they shook off the wall or a shelf. 

EDIT:  Apparantly there is some pretty significant damage at the National Cathedral in DC

You know how it is in America, a bird could poop and as long as it happens within 200 miles of NYC, Boston, or Washington DC.  It's going to make headline news.

Because most of the population in the U.S. is from the East coast. Damage did occur during this earthquake, it's not as if people are making it up.

And there is no propensity in Europe for increased coverage within 200 miles of, say, London, Madrid, Berlin. . no. . none at all, I am sure.
