I agree that in that particular situation, making sure you can rack up a bunch of wins can help. But there's nothing magical about 20 wins vs. 19 or 21.
Daalt - I disagree. I've felt on numerous occasions that it helps prestige, not a huge deal but somewhat.

maybe not for prestige, but I think there is for at large NT qualifying (but I could be wrong - someone will tell me )
No, I really, really do not think that is the case, either.
Other than the fact that more wins means a better shot at the NT... No I don't think it matters at all.

I asked seble and he said there is no particular prestige bump or milestone associated with 20 wins.

COY has absolutely 0 to do with prestige. Prestige changes right after the NT Championship game and then again after the draft. It also goes down when a new coach takes over.

Prestige can also increase with a new coach.

Or decrease.

Yeah I don't think it increases at D1 ever with a new coach.

In Rupp, I moved up from D2 to D1 a couple seasons ago and there was a one grade prestige bump (from C- to C).
So I was able to recruit with a C.

Yeah nobody got drafted? Otherwise this is good to know I have never seen it before and I was told a while back that it would be a decrease, could prolly dig up the ticket.

Interesting stuff.

For ow he was coming off 23 seasons at Catawba, 21 of which were NT (the other 2 PIT). His last 4 were Elite 8, Sweet 16, Sweet 16, Elite 8. His resume included 31 NT victories at D2...

If I recall correctly, when I moved from Manhattan to UCLA in Tark I had a bump for recruiting before falling back down after a subpar 1st season.  I think the same thing happened when kelby took over Clemson in Allen.  Big caveat that those would have happened ages ago, and things could have changed 5 times since then.

definitely no one drafted.  It was Rupp-Memphis which had been abandoned by the coach and ended up with a 311 rpi.

They dropped from C to C- after that season (which is a full grade below their baseline so maybe that played a factor) and when I took the job they went back up to C.

My D2 team had a guy drafted that season but I think that would only have an affect on my coaching prestige/resume.

Phew, I moved up to a C+ prestige after the season reset/flipped to 52 last night.  Thanks for all the info!

I think prestige is the single biggest thing in DI needing a change. There are "name" schools that haven't made the tourney in a long time clinging to higher prestiges than "lesser" schools that go to the postseason every year. That's just stupid. I want to build up my mid major and I think I can coach them up enough to do so, but I don't think my prestige is ever going to properly reflect it. Kinda discouraging.

I and alot of others that like NCAA basketball, and play this game, would disagree. It's not even in my top-10.
Canisius in real life I'm sure would simply love to win a National Title and steal recruits from Duke, Kansas, and UCLA. But it's not gonna happen in my real life time... and I'm not overly anxious to see it happen in HD. If the Metro conference wants to get 12 really good coaches... not warm bodies, but really good coaches to come in there and make 12 competetive programs... over about 10 seasons time... yeah, let em have a couple teams make the final-4. But the last thing I want to see is total seperation from reality... where a human can go into a worthless, empty,  tiny conference... win 26 games and win a title in HD.
If you like that... play DII or DIII. Leave DI alone.
