DII vs DIII recruiting question Topic

I am sure this has been discussed before but I don't check the forum much.  I am a A- prestige DII school that got a guy to consider me on the same cycle as a A+ DIII school.  Distance is 50 miles for him and 180 for me.  I didn't think anything of it until I saw "Word on the street is he is definately leaning toward the DIII school".  Anybody with good prestige in DII ever had a recruit taken away by a DIII school?  The only thing I can figure is he is offering a guaranteed start but he has plenty of other guys at the same position.

the D III school can win, but you should be able to resist with moderate amount of effort. If you are short on funds and he is flush, maybe look elsewhere, otherwise you should be able to win it.

I'm the D3 coach.  Without going into detail, I was surprised by the word on the street as well.  Knew I was leading but figured that getting the "definitely leaning" message would be a stretch.

Obviously the recruit is yours if he's your #1 priority.  That said, I can be a heck of a nuisance if I'm inclined and as Dac indicated, if you are short on funds you can easily lose.

My personal take is that the difference between D2 A- and D3 A+ is not nearly as great as the difference in the starting budgets between D2 and D3.  In my mind, the prestige is more of a tiebreaker when money is fairly evenly spent.  That's a slight exaggeration, but from what I've gathered the effort counts much more importantly than prestige at the D2/D3 level.  If you aren't (mostly) keeping pace with the D3 school, you will lose.

So if I spend more than you, you are at risk of losing.  Normally you wouldn't have to worry about that as the D2 team.  However, since my conference earned $80,000 last season in the postseason and I have carryover from the previous season where we earned $60,000, there isn't much difference in the budgets.  I think you probably have about an extra $1,000 on me.

In short, don't be surprised if you lose out on him if you don't try hard enough.

heh - don't let kujay intimidate you dude!

Although when deciding to battle it is vital to take into account things like post-season cash. I agree that the prestige factor is not the same as D I, but A- to A+ across an entire level is still a factor. I'd be uncomfortable putting a figure on it, but if you guys do battle you might compare effort later on to try to determine how much a difference it makes.

I may be wrong with this, but I think that promises (minutes and especially starts) matter more across divisions, ie a D2 start promise is of a greater value than the D 3 start, even in excess of whatever the ratio is for other effort due to prestige. Like I said, that's all my speculation though...

Good luck kujay.  Interesting take on the situation.  It will be fun to see how this battle plays out.

his take is spot-on. just FYI. i totally agree the prestige is not a major factor. doesn't mean you don't fight. just means don't expect to win "just because you are the d2 school". i won at least 90% of my d2/d3 battles as a d3 school, people really overestimate the extent of the advantage.

dac - dont agree on the start thing but really not sure...

I'm with KU, the prestige really doesn't matter much. It'll come down to who puts in the most effort. The D2 school may have a slight edge but it's nothing to bank on.

How did this turn out?
