So I've got this kid who never played a minute during the season.  I tried the red shirt about 20 times.  Always went insane about it.  Now, we are in the second round of the Tunament, he is not going to get into the game, I could promise him he will not get a minute.  And even now he goes to WE 1 with the redshirt

Had the same issue in DII once. Tried AFTER the season was OVER!. Guy still became a decent palyer over his last 3 years. Still think the game needs to do it that way or every player would be able to redshirt without consequence. You still have the option at anytime if you want to take the WE hit.

The only unrealistic thing is that the player hasn't left your team yet. Imagine in real life a coach telling a freshman, "I want to redshirt you". Player says "no, I want to play". So the coach decides to sit him at the end of the bench, not getting a single minute, and after every game call the player in his office and say "now you want to redshirt? how about now? how about now?" over and over x 30. You think at the end of the year the player would say "ok cool, no hard feelings" and take the redshirt without consequence?

In real life your player probably would have left the team 20 games ago, and if not he certainly would transfer after the season.

in fact, one think HD could use is a set of things you could do that would lead a kid to quit - as happens in real life - like telling the kid he wont be getting minutes, assigning the kid to gather the towels off the bench at the end of the game etc etc

There is NO LOGIC in the game to take into account how many games are left in the season regarding a RS. If he was not happy at the beginning based on his "factors", then he is not going to be less unhappy at a future date.

Now, that might be something that they should address ... but as it stands now, X games into the season has no bearing on accepting a RS.

People need to understand that many players simply do NOT want to stay in school for 5 years.  When a WIS player declines the RS he is simply telling you he will go to school for 4 years then graduate.  Even if it means he only actually plays basketball for three seasons.
