If you press, why not flex? Topic

Next season I'm going to be taking over a team that I'm planning on switching to press. I've been looking at what offense I want to play, and as I see it, based on elsewhere in the forums, flex offers some pretty big benefits when combined with FCP:

1. Both require a lot of speed, which helps with recruiting. Flex also utilizes ATH more than triangle.
2. Flex doesn't require as much low-post as the other set offenses, so that's one less rating I have to emphasize as much as ATH, SPD, STA and DEF.
3. Flex requires IQ a bit less than the other set offenses - more time I can spend on press IQ , which is critically important.
4. I understand that I'd need to emphasize PER more in flex - but if that means getting generally smaller, more perimeter-oriented, speedier players, that seems to be less of an issue with press than any other defense. In fact, it might be a plus.
5. Fastbreak is obviously good with press too, but then you're "double-tiring" your own team on both offense and defense, and I believe FB demands high IQs more than flex does.

It seems like flex goes with press a heck of a lot better than triangle does, and probably a little better than motion. So what am I missing here?

I think the difference between flex, motion and triangle is very minimal -- imho, definitely not enough to to tailor based on some small perceived differences.

I personally like the triangle/press combo (especially at D3). The triangle offense is effective with only one two or three dominant scorers, which allows you to recruit defensive studs without worrying about them hindering your offense. It seems to me that if you have any offensive liabilities in the motion/flex, it's harder to keep the ball out of their hands than in the triangle.

Of course, as girt often points out, the same can be said for any offense

Hmmm, seems like I might be overthinking this. Thanks guys.

If it makes sense to you... do it.
There are alot of ways to build a good team... expecially at DIII.

I am another triangle with the press supporter. The flex will provide similar benefits I'm regards to filling bench/roleplayers that can specialize in some categories and hide their deficiencies.

After reading Lotsmyths guide you would think triangle/press is the worst combination of schemes in WIS.

Halfway down the page, he has his interpretation of Hoops 101, and then later he has this:

What offensive set do you feel works best with the press defense based on the various talent categories and how the offensive set and press mesh with one another? - mtngoats

In order: fastbreak, flex, motion, triangle.
