You're really wasting practice minutes if you give all your players 7-15 minutes of study hall. I usually give freshman 5 minutes and all others 0 until the mid-term grades come out and then I adjust the minutes accordingly. I think most coaches do something similar.
So if you start freshmen out with 5 minutes of SH...and then at mid-terms they are in danger...how many minutes do you add to SH to keep them eligible? How many minutes do you add to the sophomores and upperclassmen if they are in danger at mid-terms?
It's hard to put a number on it. It depends on how "in danger" they are and how essential they are to your team. For freshman, if they're below 2.0gpa, I'll give them 10 additional minutes, if above 2.0, I'll give them 5 extra minutes. For anyone who plays significant minutes, if they're below 2.0, I'll give them anywhere from 20-40 minutes. If they're between 2.0-2.5, I'll give them between 10-20 minutes. That's just my general strategy and it's based on the old system, so take it for what it's worth (which probably ain't a lot).
