This is directed to D1 coaches with prestige of C+ and better.  Last year I lost a recruit that was on my D2 search list (with my Holy Family team) to a mid major D1 school with a B- prestige.  I was shocked he searched the D2 lists with that prestige, but he sitemailed me and said that the recruit was on his D1 list.  I couldn't believe he was looking at recruits barely above 500 even if the recruit somehow showed as D1 to his mid major and D2 to my D2 team, but to each his own. 

Now this year a conference mate lost a recruit to a D1 school with a B- prestige for a PF he had already pulled down with a sub 500 rating.  Now the guy is on the D1 list, but why the heck is a B- prestige even looking at sub 500 guys??   He has great potential and could hit 750, but that's probably only a 1 year starter on a good D1 team.

The question is, when recruiting at D1, do you generally look at everyone on the list, or is there a minimum value overall that you start at??  

bench players play like 15 minutes a game...not every team has 10  800+ rated guys...

to answer your specific ? - I don't search by ovr. I search by limiting categories and by position. For PF I might search ath >50, reb >50, def, lp, WE...if the guy happens to be 511 ovr currently but has those minimums and good potential, he gets on the list. Then depending on how many better recruits I lose to the A+ D I schools, I go down the list. Sometimes I get to where I have to take my lower guys off a D 2. The nice thing is its not usually too hard to do. Kind of like what happens when D I A+ guys take our mid D I projected starters for their bench. **** rolls downhill.

Depends on what level your school is at. You don't always need to recruit guys that are 3 year starters. Sometimes you target guys who will be good bench guys for 3 years and then a starter for 1, heck I've recruited guys expecting they would never start but would give me good depth. Lots of times guys with 500 ratings will be better than guys with 600 ratings because the 600 rating guys have crappy potential. And you can always RS those 500 rated players who have great potentials and turn them into 2 year starters.

This past recruiting period in Tark, there were D2 teams battling over a recruit, and with a B+ prestige I ended up taking him from them, mainly because I had 9 openings and needed to fill as many as possible and he was pretty solid. A while back when I had a D2 team and a D1 team in the same world, I signed a player with my D1 team, that was available to be pulled down by my D2 team.

I signed 4 players that were rated between 480 and 520 2 seasons ago, simply because those guys have great potential and will peak at 85+/85+ ath/spd. When you are not in a big 6 conf and only have 2 scholarships worth of money, you sign low rated players with high potential. 

and even BCS schools sometimes will pursue rather low rated guys - either as a backup option or to fill one schollie with small expenditure so you can use a lot of money elsewhere - when I get below 550 I start wondering whether I can do better, but I have pursued such guys even from BCS schools - in the right situation

Even in a BCS if you are not an A+ you have other schools to deal with. You are not only recruiting against the A+ teams (in your BCS and neighboring ones) but then you have to go play your conference BCS teams and have to somehow try to improve every year to get to that level. Note - I don't know how to do that.

yeah tianyi took one of my guys 2 seasons ago. I understand the tactics but I was shocked upon first seeing this and even tried to battle to keep him which was a mistake... a big mistake. I would honestly think the guys wouldn't pan out at that level but I guess they do at least for a season. I took a d3 player in Tark this season for my D2 team and I think he will actually be pretty good. 

Sometimes a season is all you really need for some players. I got a big class of 5 players ahead of the 4x 500ish players I recruited, so they will do most of the heavy lifting. All I need for the class of 500ratings players is for them to play well when they are SRs. 

On the different levels of play, is there a difference in the actual speed of growth say a D1 player growing vs a D2 player growing WE and potential being constant?

as far as I know level of play is not a factor in recruit development.

And I believe that D1 teams should be searching lower. Check out the following two players. 

Player 1, playing for a D3 team. This is a D1 calibre player.

Player 2, a high D2/low D1 recruit, who was in a battle between two D2 schools. Marquette jumped in late in signing and poached him. Had the D2 coach who was leading the battle sealed the deal, this monster recruit would be playing at D2:

Yikes, it's absurd that, that guy is in D3, he's a monster. He'd be unstoppable in D2. I'd take him over all the big men on my WVU team.

The guy was a D2 player, pulled down by getiguy, and then he won a battle against a D2 team for him. He probably would get significant PT for a bunch of BCS teams.
