Can you RS someone you promised minutes to? Topic

I was planning on RS a SO JUCO transfer but he didn't take it.

I was hoping to switch it to a FR but I promised him minutes in recruiting.

Then he will lose WE, if I understand correctly. It's just like not fulfilling your promise.

He sure did....WE dropped from 39 to 1......

Yeah, that's just not a good idea.  He might transfer.

I had literally just posted in another thread something along the lines of "I've never had a problem getting players to redshirt....."

I did this with a player. I didn't even promise anything to him. his WE went from 29 to 7. You can undo the redshirt his WE should go back up. maybe try again next season to redshirt?

I have never had an issue redshirting a freshmen I didn't make a promise to.

This season I tried to RS a JUCO sophomore and his WE dropped 70 points.   I took it off, it went back up.

I tried redshirting a freshmen I promised minutes to and his WE dropped from 30 to 7.  I took it off, it went back up.

Live and learn....

You've just been lucky.  Total crapshoot when it comes to redshirting guys you didn't inform of it.  I've had guys not play a single minute all season and still not take the redshirt.

Agreed ... I might have 25% of guys I don't inform of redshirt accept the redshirt, even after multiple attempts and no minutes in season.

I always pay attention to the evaluations, every player that I have ever RS'd that had a "he gave back the $20 or he is a gentleman comment" have accepted the RS everytime. The players that talked about wanting to be stars or loving the attention never took the RS.

On very rare occasions, you'll be able to get a player that you've promised minutes to accept a redshirt.  I've had it happen before but it's probably a 1 in a 100 chance.  Not impossible, but highly, highly unlikely.

If he accepts it, the minutes promise stays in effect for the following season, yes?

I recall that the 10/24/11 update was intended to prevent redshirting a recruit that had been promised minutes.  Has anyone pulled it off since then?

My experience is along the lines of gvsujulius'.  I expect to be able to give a shirt to a "$20 bill" or "elbowed...I don't know how he stayed so calm" recruit without informing in advance.  As long as you have some upperclassmen a the recruit's listed position I believe any recruit may take the shirt, but some just won't.  If I really want a recruit to take the shirt I'll try 3 times: before the 1st exhibition and one time after each exhibition spent planted on the pine.  I've heard of coaches trying after every game during the season, but I've never felt the desire to take it that far.

No. If you promise a recruit minutes and then redshirt him (and leave the redshirt on, whether he accepts it or not) the promises remain in effect. He will still expect to play, and will complain accordingly. If you do not remove the redshirt/play him, you will suffer the reputation hit of a broken promise and the player is likely to transfer. This used to work differently, but the loophole was closed. So basically, no, you cannot redshirt a player you've made promises to (not without serious repercussions).

10/24/2011

  • Closed a loophole where players would not complain about promised minutes even though they should have been.
  • Closed a loophole where players would not complain about promised starts even though they should have been.
