I'm guessing SH for a redshirt works normally.  Is this correct?

Yes. Or, in other words, correct.

Thanks.

If I am redshirting a player and I give him 0 Study hall minutes, and suppose his grades make him ineligible. Does that even matter, since he will still practice if ineligible? Seems like that would be a good strategy, at least for the first grading period, since I can use those minutes to work on basketball skills. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

That sounds like an effective loophole.

Then you will have to up their study hall enough for them to play the next season

That's what I was thinking too. But, maybe the idea would be to use about 1/2 of what I normally do for a freshman, just so he doesn't get too far behind.

I am going to try 4 minutes with a new recruit that has huge potential, but really low starting stats. He is a PG who is in the 20s in BH and in the teens in Passing. I really need those stats to get much higher before he plays.

he needs an overall GPA of a certain level to stay for the 5th season. Believe it is different for D I and D II

For me, one of the best uses of a redshirt is to get the GPA up so that in the later seasons you don't need to devote nearly as many SH minutes to keep them eligible while they are actually playing in later seasons.   My experience is that a sophomore (redshirt or not) with a lower college GPA is far more likely to need more SH minutes.   I guess to each their own, but I see it as a case of severely diminishing marginal returns.

Also, dacj, I am certain that you are correct for a non-qualifying recruit, but I think not for a redshirted recruit that becomes ineligible after matriculation.

If you look at SIM teams, almost all the players are in the low 2's for GPA (2.0, 2.1, 2,2, 2.3, etc)

I am pretty sure that SIMs use 5 minutes in Study Hall for freshmen and only use minutes for players who go below 2.0 for So, Jr, and Sr players.

When I have taken over SIM teams at the end of the season before rollover, I think that is what I saw.

I have always been puzzled by the ability of sim ai coaches to get all of their players to such low GPAs without any going ineligible.  You may be right, I admit that I don't get that, but has anyone been able to replicate what sim ai coaches do?  I am truly curious whether I'm applying SH minutes in a sub-optimal manner, but I have always liked having upperclassmen that need zero minutes.
