as long as fresmen don't complain about PT, allowing someone to sit a frosh all year, and then use the fact that he didn't play to get him to take a RS he wouldn't have taken at the beginning of the year would just be a loophole.   he has to react the same way no matter when you do it, or you make putting a RS on a freshman too easy.  other option of course is to have freshman complain about PT of course
Putting a RS on a Freshman is already easy ... send an intent to RS to him while recruiting (and usually 1 CV or 1or2 HV with it).  I have never had a recruit who was considering me stop considering me if I sent him an intent to RS and a CV (or HV).  If you do that, then you can redshirt the guy no problem.

hughesjr, have you ever tried this on a top D1 recruit?

If so, that's really nice you've had such success. Maybe I've never tried it, assuming it would never work.

you should tell that to the PF that stopped considering me after I informed of RS, despite giving 2cv and a hv.  i had to withdraw the RS to get him back.    informing is all well and good, but doesn't always work, especially when you are in a battle and can't afford a negative to your effort.

Again, as prof said, it is a risk-reward proposition. It is not supposed to always work. It is a strategic play with a risk and a potential gain.

Top D1 recruits should not Red Shirt ... I mean, can you imagine John Wall taking a RS?

Um, no. But when you said you'd never had a recruit refuse one, it begs the question, "all levels of recruits?"

all depends on what recruits he has tried it with - if a recruit is an easy target for you - given your school's prestige and his ranking, should work - especially with some extra effort.  IF a recruit is a reach for you, it is a lot harder.  If a recruit is in the very top group, it is very very hard or maybe not possible.  I suppose one could try taking a top 25 recruit and toss an extra 30 or 40 home visits along with the redshirt.  I have not tried that.

It would be kinda funny if you were able to successfully RS an elite top-level recruit, and then he went EE after his RS season. I wonder if the logic considers currently RS'd players eligible to declare early?

If a guy is a stretch for your team, then he like NEEDS to play for you during the first year anyway, right?

I would never expect 4 or 5 star recruit to accept a redshirt ... so while I have recruited them, I have never tried to RS one.

I would only RS someone who is high potential and not able to play based on current talent ... most of the time they will RS.

You do need to pick people to RS who are actually going to RS
