I was just wondering what the result would be if I promised a start to an ineligible recruit. The way I see it, the result would be one of three events:
1. The recruit gets mad he doesn't start his freshman year, even though he is ineligible, and takes a WE hit.
2. The recruit expects this promise to be honored next season once he becomes eligible
3. The promise is negated due to the fact that he is ineligible during the season he was promised to start
Also, how would I go about getting a 5th year of eligibility out of him? Would I have to redshirt him at some point, or will he automatically gain another year of eligibility after his 4th season?
Thanks for the help!
It is #3*. As pjb said though sometimes players become eligible before the season by retaking their SATs. If that happens and you have made promises he'll expect you to keep them.
You cannot redshirt an ineligible. Players get a total of 5 years for theri 4 seasons. At D I the player needs an overall cumulative GPA of 2.7 to return for his 5th season. I believe at D II they automatically return. although there may be a GPA involved that is very easily attainable and I just never noticed the difference. I"ve never had a D II ineligible not return for a SR/5.
*I just thought to add - there are no ineligibles at D III, so if this is for a D III school, if you make promises you'll have to keep them.
