Distance? or Prestige? Topic

Say you're at Fresno State with an A- prestige.  Can you beat B- prestige Rhode Island for a recruit in Massachusetts by matching them dollar for dollar?

I bet not but have not done the math - the question really is what is bigger - the prestige ratio or the cost ratio.  The cost ratio is sort of knowable - with some assumptions.  Fresno likely does CVs while Rhode Island likely does HVs.  Translate that into dollars per effort.

Then, there are various views on prestige boost.  If it is just dollar for dollar, my bet would be on the team that is close.

Fresno's costs should be about 3x for a CV and 5x for a HV.

Dollar for dollar at that distance, it would be nearly impossible to overcome even an A+ to B- prestige

I would think that you'd have to put in more effort than that.

emy/iguana are right, its not even close. you are talking what, 2000 for a CV vs 300 for a HV? the rhose island team, even at a high 2.5:1 CV:HV ratio, is getting a 250% premium by distance. prestige, by high estimate, is 200%. in reality, 2.5:1 is high, and prestige at 2:1 is absurdly high, just saying even with those high estimates, rhode island is ahead.

So what about buck-fifty to the dollar?

its just math (assuming you get close in your estimations on value of prestige and value of CV to HV). I assembled a chart with the recruiting costs by distance once upon a time - just figure the cost by distance, adjust by whatever prestige modifier you believe in (adjust for HV vs CV if applicable) and you'll know what the maximums could/should be...when I to it I also try to gauge if someone is high average or low in their prestige grade since prestige is a decimal system represented by rounding into letter grades, so some A- grades are close to B+. some close to A and some right in the middle. If I can't tell or don't like my guesses, I figure that I am the lowest possible A- or whatever and my opponent is the highest whatever he is just to be safe...

Yeah, I realize that.  I'm asking what y'all think.

so you spend $6000 to his $4000? using gills highest estimates you get 3 CVs (or if using 2.5:1) 7.5 HVs for your 6k, he gets 13.3 HVs for $4000 then your prestige (at 2:1) gives you 15 HVs to 13.3 so yes, assuming those ratios (and that the mileage is such that CVs cost you 2k and HVs cost him $300) you would lead by spending 1.5 to 1. I think those values are all high though, but I don't care to divulge what values I do use (for obvious reasons)...

I'd guess somewhere around 1.8x - 1.9x dollars spent being the breakeven.

I agree with guana...I'd put the break even point at about 1.8x
