I'm in my fifth or sixth season, Div III, and I think I've done ok recruiting, but have NO CLUE how to gameplan. Basically I just don't do it. I set distros at 0, go with the defaults on pretty much everything else, and just hope for the best. I have a couple guys set to take more 3pt attempts, and that's about it. The only thing I know is use slow tempo when facing a stronger opponent.
My team has a shot at the NT now and I'm at the point where I don't want to waste a potential opportunity with my laissez faire coaching style. I'd like to learn to be a better coach now that I have a grasp on recruiting.
Also, I THINK I've got a decent team, but I'm open to suggestions on areas I could improve there also (i.e. get a better point guard next year, etc.)
Thanks!
For gameplanning, I use an Excel spreadsheet and import ratings from WIS into Excel, then try to figure out matchups. The goal is to identify any weaknesses he may have and try to exploit them with your players and settings, while minimizing your own weaknesses.
As for distro, I try to allocate between 60 and 80% and let the sim handle the rest, and I've found that I can generally score more that way (and/or shoot a higher %) than if I leave everything set at 0. The trick is to give the mismatches you identified above more distro (if you have a guard with high ATH, for example, tell him to shoot fewer 3s which will force him to drive more and hopefully get his opposite number in foul trouble). You want your best players taking most of the shots, not that guard with 12 PER.
By lining up the two starting lineups on paper, you can really see things you couldn't spot otherwise. I don't do it for every game but for the important ones I try to change things to my advantage.
