Appropriate times to Double Team? Topic

I guess I am just looking for some information on double teaming.  I searched the forums and referred to the players guide, and couldn't find a whole lot.  I run a zone defense, so if I choose to double team an opposing player will this be like a trap?  When would an appropriate time to choose to double team an opposing player be, like is there a set ppg that I should consider it at?

Also, another quick question regarding zones.  Am I correct in the assumption that when I set my positioning to +X, it is a better idea to run a 3-2?  And if my positioning is -X, then it is best to run a 2-3?  Any exceptions to this?

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate any and all help!

I'm probably doing it wrong, but I've only double teamed if the opponent has one guy who is scoring about 10 or more ppg MORE than his #2 scorer.  I ask myself where his scoring would come from if that one guy was shut down, and if the answer is "not much", then I go for it.

That said, I think I've only double teamed about 4 times over the course of 10 seasons.  Just about every team I've played - SIM or human - has some form of balanced scoring or a guy on the bench who can win the game for him if you put too many defensive eggs in one bucket.

I won't touch your question about zone.  I filled in for a buddy whose team played zone and I probably screwed his season up trying to adjust it like I would Man D.

I double team the guy with the most "offensive efficiency" and the most "touches."

I add up each player's off % and their PPG and add them together. The one with a sum that is greater than 5 from the next best will get double teamed. Occasionally, against top flight competition, I will factor in shooting % as a tiebreaker when guys are within a certain amount of points.

The best time to doubleteam is when "you are losing" and there is one particular guy who is the "leading scorer."  I have asked for this option several times.  It is obvious and easy to add.  But no, we just have the "if leading scorer" option.

2-3 zone you should naturally be playing +. 3-2 zone you should naturally play -

Just repeating forum wisdom here (don't recall who said it first or I would give credit), not necessarily personal experience:
  • It can be easiest to understand zone positioning by relating it to M2M. A 2-3 zone at 0 has a similar focus (inside) as a M2M at -2. A 3-2 zone at 0 has a similar focus (perimeter) as a M2M at +2. In effect then, playing a zone allows you to swing all the way from a M2M at -7 (by playing a 2-3 zone at -5) to +7 (by playing a 3-2 zone at +5).

As for double-teaming, I do it often with generally poor results, but I'm stubborn damn it, and so I double-team when I think it *should* work (in RL).

When the day comes where "film study" is added as a practice category and box-and-1 is added as a zone option, I'll very very happy.

I don't knownif this is "right" but if I am playing a minus defense against a team that doesn't shoot many threes but has a good per shooter, I'll slap an "if leading scorer" doubleteam on that guy, just in case he tries to go crazy on my minus.

Crap, I've been running my defense wrong this season then, I had it backwards!  I'll def keep this in mind for the future.

Basically in the following 2 situations:

1. Player gives 40%+of his distro to one guy OR you're only concerned about 1 guy on his team scoring at all because of match ups.

2. He has one interior player OR one perimeter player and you want to play the opposite.  IE, You're running 2-3 zone, -3.  He has only one good shooter and the rest bad.  Double team that good shooter, the rest of the guys have to shoot from the outside.

I mostly use it in grant's second example - if he's got one player that takes all the 3s and everyone else scores inside I might sag to a -2 and DT the shooter...
