To be fair, NC gets the same kind of preferential treatment Duke does. I dislike both. For some reason Kentucky and UCLA don't seem to get the same advantages in spite of greater historical resumes and similar recent success (I didn't include Indiana since they've been sorta down for a while compared to the 4 programs I did name).
yeah, they want their precious favorite rivalry to stand untouched atop all the sports kingdoms... or something like that!! or else, just a LOT of a guy with roots in north carolina work throughout the NCAA/college basketball world.
im sure someone will prove me wrong (id appreciate it), but i cant really think of any real scandals at UNC that were just swept under the rug, like over at Duke. ok - before you guys go overboard, i mean - IN BASKETBALL. the maggette case had such clear precendents in mizzou and umass - with both programs and coaches being cleared of any wrongdoing in the situation - if that is not favoritism, nothing is. and UNC doesnt have a Dukey V equivalent, to shout their name every 15 minutes, so its not as in your face as Duke, i guess.
Billy, you kind of got me confused with your post here. You said the Maggette case was swept under the rug (which it was, and this coming from a diehard Duke fan. How it was resolved was totally unjustifiable, I'll be the first to admit that), but then you said that UMass and Mizzou were clear precedents with both programs and coaches being cleared of any wrongdoing. I guess what I'm asking is, if you're saying that both of those coaches and programs were cleared, and they were the precedent for the Duke case, then why should the Duke case be any different? Or am I just reading your post wrong?
I again, I'm a diehard Duke fan, have been for the last 27 years. I'll also admit (and did above) that the way the Maggette case was resolved was just terrible and certainly smacked of favoritism (sorry fellow Duke fans, but it did). There's no doubt in my mind that Duke is THE media darling (for college basketball anyway) and some times it evens gets to be too much for me to take, but I still gotta ride with my team, win or lose.
I got home last night in time to watch about the last 8 minutes of the game, and to be perfectly frank, Lehigh just played better than Duke did. They played harder, played better on offense and played better on defense. From what I saw, they were the better team last night and DESERVED to win. My son, who is 7, summed it up perfectly. He said that Duke looked lazy and probably thought that all they had to do was show up and they would automatically win. Told him that he was right on the money. Duke looked slow, lazy, and no other way to say it other than "entitled". If the Missouri game didn't wake them up to the fact that the little guys were coming to play,
then they deserved to have their ***** handed to them. I've been saying for years that the first game of the tourney is the little guys "Championship". Win that game and everything after that is gravy.
I'm not going to use Ryan Kelly's injury as an excuse like some Duke fans will, Duke still had enough talent that they should have won anyway. Would having Kelly had made a difference? Probably, but injuries are part of the game, deal with it. I've been telling my co-workers all season that Duke was just not that good this year, but they didn't want to listen. They're ALL UK fans, which makes this loss hurt even worse (I've been hearing it all day at work today and REALLY will if UK wins the title, which they probably will), but they still thought Duke was pretty good. "I" couldn't convince them that Duke was overrated, so maybe this will.
BIG CONGRATS to Lehigh, they played better and deserved the win and this coming from the biggest Duke fan in the state of Kentucky .
