I don't necessarily think Buzz Williams is looking for the first job to open in the state of Texas, so I think an approach by Texas Tech last season would have been brushed off like the Oklahoma and Texas A&M inquiries were.

The thing that's different this season is Marquette has a new President, Senior VP and Athletic Director.  If there is any friction between the coach and the new guys I could see some legs to the SMU rumors.

Kansas State's Frank Martin is expected to meet with South Carolina officials today and could become the Gamecocks' coach soon, but sources have told CBSSports.com that reports suggesting a deal is already in place are "premature."

"It's not done," a source said. "It's really not done yet."

The presumed move is curious on the surface but makes some sense once you understand the strained relationship between Martin and KSU athletic director John Currie. The two haven't existed together well for a while now. So though Kansas State might be a better basketball job than South Carolina, it's not necessarily a better basketball job for Martin given the circumstances at this time.

now faces the difficult job of replacing Tim Miles, a hard worker who did a solid job with the Rams over the past five seasons. So who might be in the mix to take over in ?

According to Kelly Lyell of the Coloradoan, Miles indicated at his introductory press conference at that Craig Smith and Niko Medved, two of his assistants at CSU, deserved consideration for the job. Smith is currently serving as the interim coach.

Lyell continues with several other potential targets. "... Mike Dunlap, an assistant at St. John's who led Metro State of Denver to Division II national titles in 2000 and 2002; Weber State coach Randy Rahe, a former CSU assistant; Indiana assistant Steve McClain, a former Wyoming coach; Oral Roberts coach Scott Sutton; or Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Rob Jeter

After Illinois failed to land either option 1a (VCU's Shaka Smart) or 1b (Butler's Brad Stevens) despite contract offers in the range of $2.5-2.6 million annually, the Chicago Tribune reports today that the school's coaching search is now centered around Ohio's John Groce.

Groce isn't the big name that many Fighting Illini fans have come to hope for, but his stock rose considerably in recent weeks with the Bobcats' Sweet 16 run

It's a done deal, Frank Martin to South Carolina.

and UAB hired former Kansas and UNC assistant Jerrod Haase.

Steve Prohm not leaving Murray State, he has signed a one-year extension.

Scott Sutton was a really hot name a few seasons ago when ORU was having a bit more success.  How quickly a coach can fall out of favor.  Darrin Horn is still out there too.  He would be a very good hire for a mid-major, in my opinion.  UAB might be a solid fit for him.

Now that Steve Prohm and Frank Martin are out of the picture, Mississippi St. is interviewing Scott Sutton. He also interviewed at Nebraska.

  Three coaches had 2nd interviews yesterday:  Tim Janovich (Illinois St.);  Terry Owens (Cent. Oklahoma); and Danny Manning (Kansas asst).  Manning is the favorite.

MISS. STATE
  Bryce Drew (Valparaiso) interviewed yesterday.  Another top candidate is Kenny Payne (Kentucky asst.)

KANSAS ST.
 Oklahoma asst.  Steven Henson is actively campaigning for the job. "K-State is a dream job for me. It's home. It's my alma mater. I'd love a shot at it for so many reasons.

The SMU opening is a pretty interesting follow.

Buzz Williams is apparently staying at Marquette after saying no thanks to an offer worth a reported $30 million over 10 years.  Sounds like the Poines are taking their move to the BigEast seriously.  And DePaul was counting on them to be their doormats.

I also saw that 71 year old Larry Brown may have interest in the SMU opening.  Or maybe more precisely, has interest in getting back into coaching somewhere.
