Big 12 in Knight - Last year the entire final four was big 12 & big 12 has won 5 of last 6 titles - 7 of last 11.  My team is terrible but the rest of the conference is great!

For what it's worth, I don't really consider a conference to be "tougher" just because all 12 coaches agree to game the RPI formula with their schedules (see above).  I mean there's nothing at all wrong with that, but if you're just using conf RPI to say who is toughest, then I think that could be misleading.

Maybe billyg is using something more than that when he says "top x conference in the last 20 seasons", but I wanted to make the point.

the GLV in tark was the best conference in all of D2, for the 10 year period, in the period 30-40 seasons ago. recently i checked, they dropped to #3 in the 5yr, but were still #1 in the 10 year. this is just some hash, a combination of the single school dynasty rankings i did a while back, combined with a little logic for a conference score - which slightly reduces the value of the best teams in the conference. i put that in place back when i had 5 titles in 7 years, 7 straight final 4s, because i felt a conference who had those 5 titles split over maybe 3 teams would make the conference as a whole more difficult.

so, while the ACC in allen obviously is ahead of us right now in difficulty - and actually, those two other d2 conferences have been harder the last couple seasons - i think the GLV in tark takes the cake for length and magnitude of greatness. mrpolo might disagree, upstate in wooden i think it is, has been one of the games elite d3 conferences for basically ever. but for at least like 20 seasons there, they were consistently only like 3rd in the game, where the GLV was always first, by a lot, so i tend to give us the edge (can't claim to be unbiased, however!)
I tend to recall a time when the MIAA was better, or at the very least the two conferences alternated from season to season. So the GLV was not always 1st by a lot, me and Jones made sure of that, lol.

And plus the So. Cal D3 in Knight is tougher than any other D3 or even D2 conference. How many conferences have 4 coaches with at least 3 national titles, let alone a D3 conference? We just had a "down" year and was still over .6000 RPI.

The Freedom Conference (DIII Naismith) has won 12 national titles, with 5 different coaches,  In addition, 4 other coaches have won the PIT.
4/5/2012 8:51 AM
We counted in Wooden Upstate the other day and got to 38 total titles.  I feel like that's a much better measure of "toughness" than seeing if we can all go 10-0 against a 100+ non-conf SOS.

Exactly half of the Upstate has 3+ titles btw.  Plus three more coaches with 2 titles.  I'd be surprised if anyone can match that.

I counted 33 from the glv but I cannot find swifts/dwolfs alt id or jeff/ billiegs so there is a good chance we hae more.  If so that would give six of us with 3 plus.

Nice, goes to show how stacked some of these conferences are.  I edited my post from 33 to 38, because I forgot to include 5 from one coach who didn't respond to the question.  He could potentially have more I guess under an alt.

I'm thinking there's probably several D2/D3 conferences that are realistically pretty similar.
4/5/2012 9:55 AM
A conf with OR would have so many titles it would take alot form others to beat us lol
4/5/2012 10:03 AM
Just from what I know, without polling coaches about any IDs that I'm unaware of the So. Cal coaches have 41 total championships, and three coaches with at least 8, and four others with at least 2.

Counting ORs titles in a conference title count is clearly cheating.

I'd love to be able to just transplant a team into one of these conferences to see how they'd do.
