COLUMBIA, Mo. -- It was one of the most brazen moves in the chess world since the Najdorf Sicilian Defense, perhaps even the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit.

Fresh off her second straight national championship, the legendary chess coach at Texas Tech is jumping to another school and taking all the top members of the team with her. No one has ever seen anything like it in intercollegiate competition, not even among powerhouse basketball and football teams that are worth many millions of dollars.

"There's no equivalent," said Mike Hoffpauir, a Virginia consultant who helped organize the recent President's Cup chess tournament, the game's version of the Final Four, which was won by Texas Tech. "If the coach from Kentucky gets hired by UCLA this summer, the whole team's not going to go with him."

Susan Polgar, a home-schooled prodigy from Budapest and the world's top female player by the time she was 15, is taking her champions to private Webster University in suburban St. Louis, a city that is already home to the World Chess Hall of Fame and the U.S. national championships.

It also has a swanky new chess club and scholastic center bankrolled by a billionaire, the kind of place where students can immerse themselves in chess arcana, learning moves such as the King's Indian Defense and others with mysterious names steeped in the game's 1,500-year history.

Webster lured the team with the promise of a greater financial investment.

"The program grew rapidly, and Texas Tech wasn't ready to grow with the speed of the program," said the coach, who founded the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence, known as SPICE, in 2007. "St. Louis today is the center of chess in America. It just seemed like a perfect fit."

COLORADO STATE
Albuquerque Journal
reported Friday that CSU officials—likely AD Jack Graham and other high-profile decision makers—flew to New Mexico to interview New Mexico associate head coach Craig Neal and New Mexico State head man Marvin Menzies.

CBSSports.com's Garry Parrish reported Wednesday that Colorado State also talked to Southern Miss' Larry Eustachy and former Miles' assistants Craig Smith and Niko Medved were each interviewed Tuesday.

Graham paid JMI $75,000, a coaching search firm, to help him find suitable candidates and they have made quick work together to narrow their list to five.

DUQUESNE

Long Island coach Jim Ferry is a candidate to become the next basketball coach at Duquesne where the 17-day search to replace Ron Everhart is winding down, a university source said today.

Ferry, a native of Elmont, N.Y., has been the coach at Long Island for the past 10 years, leading the team to consecutive NCAA Tournament berths the past two seasons

CBS Sports reporter Jeff Goodman posted on Twitter on Monday: "The three leading candidates for Colorado State are (Southern Miss coach) Larry Eustachy, (New Mexico State coach) Marvin Menzies and Randy Rahe (Weber St. coach)

Another source, however, lists Ernie Kent as a leading candidate. Kent coached at Oregon for 13 years before being released a couple of years ago

DUQUESNE

From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

If Duquesne wants sizzle, Orlando Antigua, the former Pitt player and assistant and current Kentucky assistant, is the popular choice.

Who's hotter than Antigua?

When your team plays in two consecutive Final Fours while producing enough lottery picks to field an NBA expansion team, you sit at the head of the table.

Antigua dominated talk among college basketball coaches and administrators meeting over the weekend in New Orleans about being the best candidate to replace Ron Everhart. Antigua is a familiar name from a big-time program who has paid his dues.

We know Antigua can recruit (see: Anthony Davis), but can he coach?

With some reports from the Chicago Sun Times that Davis was paid up to $200K to come to Kentucky, it might be wise to sit on Antigua a bit longer.

True or false, you cannot ignore an allegation like that and if true, it could bite whoever hires him.
you can when the paper/reporter took as much flak as they did, and when they pulled the report within an hour, and when it was mentioned in offhand fashion in like the 11th paragraph of the article...
4/10/2012 5:31 PM
im not saying UK didnt pay him - how would i know? but that "allegation" was about as meaningful as this one - cal HIMSELF paid john wall 500K straight cash to follow him to UK, and to hide the money, he delivered it intravaginally with the help of two dozen of his finest hooker associates, an anonymous source says. i have good reason to believe it, as the anonymous source has yet to be wrong about anything (the source is my ***, and has also failed to be right about anything, but that is beside the point).

that is almost word for word, the report from the chicago times. well, maybe i took a slight liberty, or two, but that is still far lesser in magnitude than the liberty taken by the author of that article. my source would not even wipe himself with that paper!

But this is chess.  Unless they have a timer it could take years to make the series of moves required to get them to Webster State.

COLORADO ST.

11 hours ago, a 'source' that said Craig Neal (New Mexico asst.) would get the job.  6 hours ago, a different source said it would be Ernie Kent (formerly at Oregon). Regardless, I expect an announcement today

DUQUESNE

Jim Ferry, who's led LIU-Brooklyn to consecutive NCAA's is the new coach at Duquesne.

LIU-BROOKLYN
They named assistant Jack Perri as their new head coach

LSU
Assistant Johnny Jones is the front runner. He played on LSU's 1981 Final Four team. He coached No. Texas from 2007-2011 and led them to two NCAA's

Also mentioned are: Virginia coach Tony Bennett, whose wife is from Baton Rouge

Morehead St. coach Donnie Tyndell. Morehead eliminated Louisville in the 2011 NCAA tourney

Valpo coach Bryce Drew, who has already turned down Mississippi St.

Buzz Williams of Marquette. He previously coached at U. of New Orleans

Mike Davis, formerly at Indiana and UAB, has expressed interest in the job as well

SMU

A source said that SMU, hoping to show increased dedication to basketball in anticipation of the move to the Big East, is willing to spend $2 million to lure Rick Majerus from St. Louis.
Indiana asssitant Steve McClain, formerly head coach at Wyoming, has already interviewed for the job

The people that I know in college hoops (assistant coaches, agents, writers, etc.) have basically all told me that Cal is as dirty as they come.

I know that will be an incredible shock to UK fans. I'm sorry.

SMU is in a bind. Ready to go the the Big East but noone wants to coach their basketball program.  I suspect their heavy emphasis on football is a drawback
4/13/2012 7:26 AM
Not to mention a complete and total lack of basketball history at the school.

Not intending to interrupt over the thread, but isn't your Wisconsin football program the 3rd most penalized in history, behind SMU and Arizona St? And that doesn't even include the moral issues, like goping male students by an asst. athletic director.  Nor A,D, Alvarez's fun with cheerleaders.

NORTHERN ARIZONA

has hired Memphis assistant Jack Murphy

LSU

Former LSU player Clarence Caesar wants Johnny Jones (North Texas) as the next coach. Jones was an assistant at LSU under Dale Brown. Caesar said, "

. "I could have gone to a lot of places, but I came to LSU because of Johnny Jones. When he came to recruit me, he made me feel like the prettiest girl at the prom."
Some LSU fans don't want Jones. He's never won an NCAA game nor coached above the Sun Belt Conference level.

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL

Good luck to their new coach..geez.   After firing Isaiah Thomas, the school is refusing to release their current players from their scholarships so they can transfer elsewhere.  The players sent a letter to the school administration, saying Thomas was their mentor and they only came to FIU becuase of him.   The team also walked out of the annual awards banquet just before the basketball awards were announced.
The players were also upset because, after Thomas was fired, he was escorted from the building by policemen.

1. Source?
2. Anything you might be referring to is minor. To even think to compare it to Cal's ridiculousness in itself compromises your credibility.

(The recent ***'t AD thing is bad and embarrassing. But that's a rogue idiot and has nothing to do with actual corruption within a program.)
