Should I take a chance? Topic

I will only have 1 scholarship to give at the end of the season.  I've targeted a pg whose numbers are off the charts, but..... his ath and def are both 1's.  He's got a work ethic of 80 (or close to it) and I can afford to redshirt him.  This is my first season and I'm not sure how much improvement to expect from new players.  Any input?

Pass on him.  With starting ratings that low, he'll never be much more than deadwood on the bench.

Thanks

If by "numbers" you are referring to high school stats, they are simply window dressing, along with height and weight.
The only thing that matters from the high school stats is FT%.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: You're new, so it's nothing to be worried about, especially since you haven't actually recruited anyone yet, but ATH and DE are probably the most important ratings in this game, particularly at the D3 level. Without good team ATH and DE, you'll never (almost never, a team with low ATH but high ratings elsewhere won the D3 national championship in Crum a couple of seasons back) win anything.

Read up on the forums, find guides for rookies, and find someone who is willing to mentor you (see the mentor list at the top of the forum page).

And with a WE of 80 players will develop quickly, anything north of 60 you will see rapid development. 50s is fine, and in the 40s/30s you can develop a player more gradually with a lot of early playing time. Anything in the 20s or below you should probably avoid (definitely avoid if under 20).

I was talking about all his other ratings.  Speed is 73, WE is 82, Stamina 83, and solid perimeter, ball handling and passing numbers.  I figured ath and de were pretty important.  My biggest question was if with such a high WE, he may increase his Ath and De enough to justify it since I could afford to redshirt him.  But I'm guessing not so I'll move on.  Thanks for the info

depends what his potentials are. without seeing those nobody really knows where he could end up.  reality is that with that D and that Ath he's probably not a guy you'll ever be able to start or play much...but depending on the makeup of the rest of your team, your team defense, and just how high his other ratings are (and how high they can get with his potential) he might be a guy you can bring off the bench for a burst of scoring for 8-10 mins a game.

with an established team i'd say you'll never take a guy like this...but if you're new and just taking over a SIM team this guy may well be better than some of the guys already on your roster (i did not look at yours)

I actually have a decent roster.  Jr heavy, so next year will be the year.  But with only 1 scholarship to give, and what I've heard here, I think I'll just keep looking.  Thanks again everyone.

are 1 ratings ever not low potential?

They used to have a chance at being high potential, but I believe Seble changed that.  I'm about 99.9% sure that a 1 rating is always low potential now.  Could be wrong, but  I want to say 10 is about the lowest rating now that could have high potential.

Anything single digits is low potential.

jhil, sp is important for guards, sta not so much (simply because by the time they're playing for you, pretty much any guard will have solid enough sta), and we can be important depending on potentials, although with low potential it means they're simply not going to improve much. I say this just so what you have a better idea re: what to look for in ratings. (If you do a search, there are tons of threads re: what ratings to look for, etc.)

Thanks for the info girt

jhil, not sure if you know about Future Stars Scouting, but that's the recruiting device that allows you to see potential in recruits. You buy states and you can see the potentials (high, average, low) of all of the players' ratings in that state. So despite a high work ethic, a player with low potential in any category will not improve (or will hardly improve) in that category, and if the player is recruitable with a rating of 1, as the other guys stated, it will never not be low potential.
