That's unbelievable!  Buzz has been at 6 schools since 2000, including two stints at Appalachian St.  Those coach-in-waiting jobs fail more than they succeed.   What school was it where the coach was undermining his soon-to-be replacement, even asking a reporter to dig up dirt on him?

Grambling, still without a basketball coach, will have to answer some questions from applicants.

(AP)

Grambling State football coach Doug Williams has filed suit claiming the school reneged on its contract promises with him.

The state court suit filed in Baton Rouge says Williams' contract was never approved by the University of Louisiana System governing board and the school is now trying to pressure him to sign a reduced deal on a "take it or leave it" basis.

Williams also claims the school failed to pay promised bonuses to him and his staff for winning the 2011 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship.

Williams did not immediately answer a request for comment.

A statement from UL System president Randy Moffett said good-faith negotiations had been conducted for almost a year, and Williams was offered one of the best contracts in conference.

That was my school-West Virginia University. When Dana Holgerson was brought in as the "Coach-in-waiting" then-Head Coach Bill Stewart went to a friend at a Charleston, WV newspaper [I believe] and asked him to find some dirt on Dana. Classy move, Bill.

I hope the Fla. International president gets the name right this time. He introduced Isaiah Thomas as 'Isaiah Thompson'.    I hope he doesn't confuse Pitino with the ex-Arkansas coach Petrino

it appears Larry Brown has agreed to become the head coach of SMU.
Sounds like his coaching staff will include former Illini assistant Jerrance Howard and Kentucky assistant Rod Strickland.

Still undecided on joining the staff is current Illinois State head coach Tim Jankovich who apparently has been offered by Brown a "Head Coach in waiting" position at SMU.

Agree with above "head coach in waiting" is garbage.

We're down to 5 vacancies:  Brown, Grambling, North Carolina A&T, North Texas and So. Mississippi

The North Texas A.D. says he's "in no hurry" but hopes to hire a coach within 10 days.

Assistant coach Shawn Forrest could be a candidate for the job. Former NBA and college head coach Reggie Theus, Marquette assistant coach Tony Benford, former Nebraska and UTEP coach Doc Sadler, Louisiana-Lafayette and former Sam Houston head coach Bob Marlin and Creighton assistant Steve Lutz have also been mentioned.

Southern Mississippi is interviewing Kermit Davis, the coach of Middle Tennessee.  They won 27 games this season, including the Sun Belt regular season title, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT. They defeated UCLA and Tennessee during the season.

Middle Tennessee returns 11 of 13 players and has signed a highly-rated JUCO player.

Davis played at Mississippi State where his father, Kermit Davis, Sr., coached.

St. Francis (PA) fired coach Don Friday and, without a search or looking at other candidates,  hired Rob Kimmel....the son of their A.D.

In their defense, their program has been terrible;  the 34-year-old Rob Kimmel's been an assistant there for 12 years, even before his Dad was the A.D., and he was a 3-year starter at the school.
While his Dad was on the 'search' committee, he didn't have the final say.

Probably not a bad hire, but isn't there an NCAA diversity rule that schools must open searches to minority candidates?  That is why I thought NCAA schooIs have to go through a serach process. I know it is true in the NFL and I thought so in the NCAA.  Anyone know?

How is the NCAA improving diversity among football coaches? The NCAA is attacking the problem on two fronts. First, the NCAA encourages schools to embrace diversity and to hire minorities.  Second, the NCAA is working hard to grow the pool of minority candidates through career advancement and professional development clinics.

Does the NCAA have anything like the NFL’s “Rooney Rule?” Legally, the NCAA can’t adopt such a rule. The “Rooney Rule” is a National Football League policy requiring teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching positions. The NFL is a for-profit business that is able to legally draft and enforce such policies. In contrast, the NCAA, a non-profit and voluntary member association, cannot influence individual campus hiring practices. However, in early 2008, Division I athletic directors recognized the problem and adopted hiring guidelines similar to the “Rooney Rule.” While voluntary, peer pressure plays a major role in ensuring schools comply with these guidelines. .

Interesting!  Thanks Al!  So I wonder how that "peer pressure" will manifest itself here or if St Fancis will get any pushback at all.

In a surprising move, Virginia Tech fired Seth Greenberg this afternoon.   Generally, firings happen earlier in the spring, especially at major schools.

North Carolina A&T has hired Cy Alexander. He has 16 years of coaching experience in the MEAC when he was at South Carolina St. from 1987-2003.  He took them to 5 NCAA's

Va Tech seems to be an ugly situation.
Two of the three assistant coaches already had left and the third was expected to follow.  Combined with the resignation of the Director of Basketball Operations which is similar to a fourth assistant.
