How are they calculated?  Can't figure out the point system.

It seems that they take into overall ratings, so, jucos/transfers help.  It also helps to have more players in a class.

I believe that walkons, JUCOs, and transfers are all considered as 'true freshmen' in the rankings.  Also, they are rated 'before potential' so the list isn't of much value other than bragging rights.

Since recruiting rankings don't mean a darn thing and are in almost no way an indicator of current or future performance... the harsh but true answer is "who cares?"

I mean I think they matter a little.  The #1 class is better than the #64 class. At D1, its actually fairly accurate.  With potential being so important at D2/D3, its not as good.  But at D1, you sign 3 775 overall rated players, you did pretty well, no matter the potential.

I've had some classes that ended up putting me in the NT with all-conf or AA players and those classes weren't very highly ranked.

On the other hand, I've seen buddies land 2 or 3 jucos and get a top 10 ranking.

So the only thing they're good for is bragging rights.  That's all.

Rankings at the lower levels were awful well before potential; potential just made them worse. I have no other way of explaining how over 10 senior classes that won numerous all american awards and went to no worse than 5 final fours had a grand total of zero ranked classes, before potential was put in. It's just always been that bad.

DI may be better. I don't have the experience to comment on that.
