In that first year of a rebuild - where you're just trying to build up wins 'cause you have no postseason chances at all - does anyone else theme their non-cons?  At Northwestern, I noticed that there are twelve DI schools in the state of Illinois, with U of I and Northwestern being two.  So this happened:

Yeah, yeah, I know, I lost to EIU.  Word is that my players were distracted by Charleston's vibrant nightlife.



In my first year at strong liberal arts college Whitman, I'm currently scheduling the toughest/most selective/best-academically schools in DIII.  Apologies to those, myself included, who think their alma maters should be on the list - I'm using RL prestige/notoriety as a tiebreak:
 

#2 at Brandeis Sim AI 0-0 0 0
#3 at Case Western Reserve Sim AI 0-0 0 0
#6 at New York U. Sim AI 0-0 0 0
#8 Swarthmore Sim AI 0-0 0 0
#9 at Pomona-Pitzer Sim AI 0-0 0 0
#10 at Carleton Sim AI 0-0 0 0

Offers are out to Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, Caltech, and Wash U.  If anyone turns me down, schools like Bowdoin, Williams, and Oberlin would be next to get offers.  And in hindsight, one of those should've probably gotten the first-round offer instead of CWRU.

I did all A schools a while back because they were the easiest to request.  Yep I'm that lazy, I didn't even want to scroll

Carleton (MN) is one of the top 5 liberal arts colleges in the country.  Not an alum, but if you're looking for a nice trip to Minnesota in the fall...

I didn't have a theme, per se, but one season I scheduled my opponents in alphabetical order. It helped my players with their phonics.

But either way, yes, you'll notice that I did schedule Carleton.   My alma mater, Lawrence, gets killed in the rankings because a large percentage of students are double-degree (B.A. and B.Mus.) and therefore graduate in five years.  This destroys the school's four-year graduation rate (even though those students never intended to graduate in four!) and therefore its rankings.  Hate those rankings.

Sometimes I schedule my non-con so as to minimize unnecessary travel - OK State'll play @ Florida, then @ Kentucky, then some home games before an @ Cal, for instance.

I have done this before, worked my way out from NY to Washington over 5 games, and come back over the next five. Only gave me 2 home games, but it was cool.

for a second, i thought that was in order. i was gonna say, what the hell are you thinking putting case western above schools like chicago, caltech, carnegie, and wash u... but then i realized, you didn't. so its all good :)

im not that familiar with pomona-pitzer. what are they known for? also i would have thought tufts made the cut, but maybe they have fallen off of late? rensellear poly tech wouldn't be a bad choice, either.
