there are way too many other factors to get any kind of an accurate answer.

if i were you i'd suggest focusing much more on learning the game and being successful at each level with your own recruits so that when you finally do make it to D1...and then when you finally do make it to a BCS school....you will have the tools to actually be successful.

Starting out in World Allen in Season #1.... I made it to D1 in 4 seasons.....  took me 13 seasons to get to ACC (UVA) and then in my 18th season took over Kansas.  Knowing what I know now, I should have stayed at UVA, because I was there before they started publicizing prestige.  I probably left an A+ prestige team at UVA for a A+ prestige team in Kansas when recruiting was much harder..... as a result, I left Kansas and regret that move ever since.

But my path to Kansas goes as follows:

Season 1: D3 Eastern Mennonite  - 26-4, 1st round, CT Champ, CCOY
Season 2: D3 Eastern Mennonite  - 21-8, No Post Season, CCOY
Season 3: D2 Barton - 26-5, Sweet 16, CCOY
Season 4: D2 Barton - 30-4, Final 4, CT Champ, CCOY
Season 5: D1 Lafayette - 16-11, No Post Season
Season 6: D1 S. Carolina St - 26-4, 1st round, CT Champ, CCOY
Season 7: D1 Central Florida - 7-21, No Post Season
Season 8: D1 Central Florida - 13-16, No Post Season
Season 9: D1 Central Florida - 15-12, No Post Season
Season 10: D1 Central Florida - 20-10, 1st Round, CT Champ
Season 11: D1 Central Florida - 23-6, 1st Round
Season 12: D1 Central Florida - 25-5, Sweet 16
Season 13: D1 UVA - 22-9, 2nd Round
Season 14: D1 UVA - 18-11, 1st Round
Season 15: D1 UVA - 24-6, 1st Round, CCOY
Season 16: D1 UVA - 23-6, 1st Round
Season 17: D1 UVA - 28-3, 2nd Round, CT Champ, CCOY
Season 18: D1 Kansas 16-11

agreed - learn the ins-and-outs of the game first, try to establish yourself as a consistent NT coach at the D2 or D3 level, and have success with your own players before you think about jumping to D1

don't rush just to get to D1 without the knowledge and tools that will allow you to have success

All that said, it was a different game back then and it's a lot harder to build programs into contenders now than it was back then..... And with the teams in the big conferences already established breaking into the elites will take longer for most people than it did for me simply because they have to wait for the big program coaches to get tired of the game and move on.  Elite programs aren't as available as they were in the first 20 seasons.

took me a long time to get to Mizzou.... I could have left for a TSU type school earlier, but I got attached to some of my recruits and wanted to see what they could do.
