With only one day of practice left, I thought I'd give a shout-out to Avery Morris, the best freshman that I've ever had. He came in as a 462, took a redshirt and improved 79 points to get to 541 overall by the end of the season. He then improved 7 points in the offseason, and has improved 113 points this season to reach an astounding 661 (he's a D3 freshman!!!).

He won Conference Freshman of the Year, was named Third Team All-Conference (10.7 PPG in conference), and shot an incredible 52.8% from the field as a point guard. I'm looking forward to having him develop even more (he still has plenty of room for growth) and coaching him for the next three seasons.

Wow, that's impressive! A little jealous to be honest

It's a shame he can't rebound any better. I'd cut him if I were you.

What are you talking about?!?! He's twelve times better at rebounding than my starting PG on my other D3 team ;)

Rebounding, subpar.  Can't block a shot to save his life, pathetic.  Definitely, definitely a prime candidate to be putting on the chopping block.  In fact, the very instant that you're able to rescind his scholarship, you need to cut him loose.  You can't hit that button fast enough. 

And yes, just for clarification, all of the above was delivered with a heavy dose of sarcasm.  Nice player!

And don't worry, I'm one of those guys who is always sarcastic (online and in person). I hate reading these threads and seeing people respond seriously to blatantly sarcastic remarks... but that ain't me!

High in Perimeter still. Average in Speed, Defense, Low Post, Ball Handling, Passing, and Stamina. I try to keep track of when it turns from blue to black, and from what I recall he should get to 91 Speed, I forget Defense (somewhere in the low 60s though), he had LH Low Post coming in and I haven't spent much practice time there, so should have 15-18 points of growth left, came in average at ball handling with a starting rating of 58, so he'll reach a max of 77, Passing will max at 65, and Stamina will get to 100 (yay!!!).

AND average in FT.

This (and other recent examples) makes me think I should concentrate all my recruiting dough on a battle or two and roll with two or three walk-ons every season.

(Add) I mean I don't know if I would take it that far, but the eleventh man has seemed utterly superfluous for several seasons now, and the tenth man nearly so.

Didn't mean to take the focus away from your freshman star, but maybe he (and Mendieta, a juco) are good examples of this -- spend the dough on a couple of guys like that and the open spots don't hurt much if at all.

Yes, a redshirt freshman indeed, a fact that I gladly volunteered. Redshirting is a great and legitimate tool to either help develop a player with a bunch of potential or to simply get more seasons out of a player at the peak of his abilities.

Thanks, I knew it would be a bit adventurous at times, but with slowdown and the zone, I don't really have stamina issues with an eight man roster. I actually swung and missed on two recruits this past recruiting session, so it wasn't planned, but it's made me realize that with a zone defense I should concentrate and spend more money on one or two spots less than the amount of schollies I have to ensure that I land players I really want.

Good for you man in all honesty.  I redshirted a freshman who I thought wouldn't really be worth a salt about 5 or 6 seasons ago and he ended up being one of my best/favorite players of all time, so I know where you're coming from, and you got a **** ton out of that guy...congrats...I hope he top 15s in everything for you.
