I am baffled by this Topic

Okay -- I'm officially perplexed: a recruit is considering another school. I jump in, and get this scholarship email -- "Coach, it's down to a handful of schools -- you're on my very short list, but I still feel like I need more information about the program." fair enough. So, I do NOTHING, and then the very next cycle get this scholarship email -- "Hey, coach, your scholarship offer really means a lot to me. I can see myself at Alabama next season. Hopefully nothing changes between now and the signing period."

So -- the first message means I'm losing but close, the second means I'm definitely winning. Right? But I didn't do anything, and if consideration credit was playing any part, it would be on the oer guy's side. For what its worth, the word on the street says hes struggling between our two schools. He couldn't have hit the redshirt button and gotten anything but "You crazy" since its the #2 PG. So -- what gives? Am i interpreting the first message incorrectly? Does anyone understand?

did the other guy fill his scholarships?

Nope -- signing haven't happened yet.

Maybe he informed him of redshirt

^^^ +1. When an A+ school with 6 openings jumps onto one of my players (much less 3), I'm likely to signify my withdrawal from a battle by RSing immediately.

Any reason why?

Even if you are withdrawing, why do you make it known? Is it so other coaches don't think you are in a battle and jump on other recruits of yours, or is it a courteous thing?

I have been burned in the past by withdrawing from players I thought I couldn't get only to see the other team not sign him and then the player fall to a 3rd team later in recruiting because of it. After that I decided even if I'm not sinking in more money I should at least keep him as a possibility until I know the other team is taking him.

Depends-- I won't always do it... but if I'm in other battles I want to win, or if I'm trying to avoid them, yes, those would be solid reasons.

certainly nothing to do with courtesy. Sometimes it's better for your opponent to think you're going all-in on 1 guy, sometimes you want him not to know who you're fighting for (or even how many). It's all about people perceiving your position as strong.

In the case you're citing above, where a 3rd team ends up with him, you've erred by not simply withdrawing the "inform of" once the guy is available again. Your previous effort, assuming it's significant, would still weigh in a lot, and you could still sign him. All that depends on the timing of everything, too, and when you've given up the battle, he's decided not to sign, what other efforts you've made, etc etc etc.

I would do it because I don't want anyone to know i spent money on someone who isn't considering me.  If you can't tell that I just wasted $$$$, I am less of a poaching target.

He wouldn't even necessarily have to inform of redshirt.  He might just have decided not to battle and withdrawn the scholarship offer.  I'd assume if the opponent removes the scholarship offer, you should get an in the lead message if you're the only with a scholarship offered to him.

I don't know if that is 100% but rescinding an offer does carry negative recruiting value which could trigger the lead change

For what it's worth:
A) He didn't redshirt, because we were still both being considered, and
B) He didn't withdraw the offer, because two cycles later the other guy took the lead again.

Still baffled :)

Almost this exact same situation happened to me before as well. I'm still not quite sure what to make of it. In the end, I lost the recruit, but hopefully you experience a different outcome than I did. ;)

Helpful if you have a desire to see your face turn blue.
