Boosters Complaining? Really? Topic

I just finished up my fifth season at NC State in Crum

I've reached the postseason in all but my first season and I reached the NT for the team's first time in over 40 seasons.

My RPI line over the past four seasons is 41 / 44 / 82 / 57. My record obviously suffers because I play in the toughest conference in Crum, but  I inherited a mediocre team that was losing 5 players, including their two best from the previous season.

I can't help but think I've done nothing but a great job of rebuilding this team to be in the best shape it's ever been in. My four consecutive seasons with an RPI under 100 is the longest streak in the history of NCSU in Crum (The previous record was two).

Anyway, so I have to vent and I was wondering what anyone else thought about this because in my opinion, the boosters should be begging me to take an extension.

Does WIS take into account seasons under .500 as a bigger negative regardless of RPI?

I had nearly the exact same experience at State in Naismith, albeit ages ago. You've done a good job, and are nowhere near getting fired. boosters complaining is not a big deal the first season you see it...

that said, you're in your 5th season, have 0 winning seasons and only 1 NT appearance and no NT wins. Hardly the stuff of legend at a school with high baseline prestige. Keep the rebuild going and you'll be fine.

My only other suggestion-- until you can compete a little better year-in/year-out in league play, you should probably lighten up your non-conference schedule a little bit. 8-10 wins there every season go a long way towards NT bids and winning records, and those help...

Actually, except for your immediate family, your boosters now have season tickets at Wake Forest

Yeah, my non-conf ended up a little tougher than I had anticipated this season. I figured I had 9 wins for sure, but fell victim to a couple of upsets. I pretty much have the same mindset heading into next season, but I should also be better in conference play.

Yeah, and they saw me upset #13 WF in their own house in my third conference game.

car, you really haven't made any discernable progress over the last four seasons. More or less the same, and only one winning season. So yes, I could see the boosters starting to get restless. Don't think that's unreasonable.

And yeah, I get that you play in a tough conference and that makes things harder. No question. But if you're a weaker team in a tough conference, you need to schedule appropriately, and you're not doing that. So that's going to contribute to that booster frustration ...

It's my opinion that you should have to win a NT game every four years or so to keep you job in a Big  6 conference.

I still think it's ridiculous for a booster to grow restless because why? I turned the team around too quickly and I couldn't continue at the pace of progress?

I took over a team that was ~320/324 DI Crum teams in terms of wins. They hadn't made a NT in 40 seasons. They hadn't had a player drafted in 30 seasons. They hadn't had a prestige above a B in the team's existence. They had just lost their two best players and three other contributors. They also had a C+ prestige.

In five seasons, I've appeared in and won as many games as the team did in the past 38 seasons combined. The current B+ prestige is the highest in the team's existence.

To girt and Trentonjoe: If you were a real-life booster, you wouldn't have the same opinion. And let me know when you have some experience in a Big 6 conference Trentonjoe, because you don't realize how difficult it is to win a NT game until you get there. I've been on the wrong side of some unlucky seeding and untimely upsets so please give me an update when you' ve completely turned around a Big 6 team and are consistently winning NT games. Also, I've only been at NCSU for one year so I guess that gives me four more to win a NT game?

you need to schedule easier OOC to get more wins

that will help directly - boosters like wins

and it will help indirectly since the wins should get you better NT seeds which will increase the odds of any NT win

you have at least two seasons to get some more wins on the stat sheet, but I think that is the core message

You're right.   You are doing a great job.  Sorry for disagreeing with you.  Keep up the great work, you'll turn it around in no time, champ!

It's always funny to see someone make a post asking for opinions and then getting all ****** off when those opinions don't match up with their own.

If you're going to try to tear people down when they don't write what you want to read, then you should add some qualifications in order to respond.  Here are some suggestions:

"Please only respond to this post if you have: X amount of wins / above X% winning percentage / X number of national championships"

-- or --

"Here are the acceptable opinions: A) Yes, you are totally getting screwed, you should send a ticket and HD should immediately promote you to the job of your choosing as a result of this outrageous insult to your coaching abilities.  B) All of the above."

C'mon, if you're so positive you're getting screwed then just send a ticket and don't ask for opinions you may not agree with.  Or put on your big boy pants and try to see it from another point of view, and then, if you're feeling really mature, don't respond like a five year old would when his parents take away his toy.

I think the point is that I'm not saying that I'm exceeding expectations, but the boosters certainly shouldn't have had higher expectations than what I've done. Not trying to be a jerk Joe, but it's irritating that one would put such a requirement on a situation which they lack experience in. I'm not looking to argue, but that's my opinion.

Please note that I did not get ****** at one person besides getting annoyed at Joe saying that a Big 6 school needs to win a NT game every 4 seasons. And the only reason why that annoyed me was because that really had nothing to do with my question.

I appreciate the advice of anyone who gave it in this thread, even though I slightly disagree with girt's opinion that I haven't made progress because I don't think he considered the talent that the team had when I came there.

Also, I did send a ticket and the only one acting like a child here is you. I didn't say anything negative to anyone who offered advice so you might wanna take another look at the posts before you try to act like you're the wisest man in the room.

I did make the playoffs a bunch of years in a row at Princeton.   That was a complete rebuild.....
