No offense intended...I just dont get these "what should I do Topics".  If  you dont like your own judgement, why play?

so you don't trust your judgement on what size classes you should have?  why not?  perhaps you have difficulty telling that you are making up a difference without much distinction?

I well I was hoping for intelligent discussion, but alas, ended up with your thoughts. Perhaps someone more inclined to the former rather than latter will respond.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't one of the most useful features of forums helping new players better understand the game? He isn't asking for suggestions on what he should do with his team. He's gathering information on different philosophies in the game. If that offends you in some way, perhaps you should move to a different thread on the boards.

C'mon guys don't start a feud here. In the words of war (a band) - "why can't we be friends"?  And yes tania I try to keep my class balanced but I'm not hell-bent on it.

To answer your question, you more or less already know the advantages and disadvantages of the 3-3-3-3. It keeps your team competitive on a yearly basis, whereas stacking classes with more players helps you make a 1 or 2 year run before rebuilding. My only problem with maintaining a 3-3-3-3 is that I love redshirting, and you can't have both on a yearly basis.

Ideally, I'd love to have a 3-3-3-3 and then just redshirt one player every year to maintain it. If I wind up going 4-2-4-2 or something, it's not the end of the world. The balanced approach is, in my opinion, best for people trying to maintain a quality program for the long haul. You just need to keep an eye to the future if you redshirt players and, when necessary, grab a JUCO to re-balance the classes if things start to get out of whack.

The off-balance approach is better if you're looking to move up a division. Stack two classes, wait for them to get upperclass status and then apply for positions after they've had their peak year.

@ first i thought this was a d!<k response...but a contributor should be able to give (at least) as much as he gives!

If you're talking lower levels, you can easily have a class of 5 in there and never have to go in rebuild mode as long as you can consistently recruit well. In theory, 3-3-3-3 is the best for consistency, I just find it a little boring. And I always try and redshirt someone anyway, so with that it would make that model a 3-3-3-2 I guess. Ideally I like for each of my number of upperclassmen and underclassmen on the court in a given year to be between 7 and 4.

That may be true (no idea), but he's not just being a d!<k to the original poster but to anyone who might be wondering the same thing as well.

I just try to make sure that I don't end up with classes of 6 - that hurts. Otherwise, I just let it play out in a way that's best for my team. I've never strived for perfect balance in class sizes, and it hasn't really hurt me.
