@brad: I'm still pretty new to the game so I'm learning. Are you saying it's necessary to occasionally pump some recruiting effort into a guy even after you have the lead even though you're given no indication that you've lost it? Say I was pretty tight, would this still be necessary? Or that he was simply leaning in my direction. I just am a little confused as to why a few phone calls here and there would logically make a difference in the recruiting battle I just lost. Not saying you're wrong, just saying if that's the way the system is set up, that's pretty dumb.

@bdpoor: I get what you're saying about "if you don't want to put in a few hundred bucks extra..." but where is that line? Knocking him off the considering list is way more than a few hundred extra bucks. If I'm having to spend 1K+ extra, that could make or break signing a different recruit, too. Yes, if I had known I wasn't guaranteed to get the guy, I would have spent more. But I assumed the "you got the lead" message meant just that. So why should I waste money? Obviously the lesson is that there is some randomness involved here and "to be sure" you need to spend more. But that seems like a very flawed system to me.

You might want to do this (i) if you are leading but are not the only team listed, (ii) if you are dealing with an ineligible player who you want to increase the odds will  show up on campus, or (iii) if you anticipate someone poaching and you want to make sure they fire a blank and don't get interested.

Otherwise, I would not do this.

the phone call thing may work for some people, but im pretty sure the large majority of veteran coaches do not do that. ive never heard of anyone, and it doesn't really make sense when you know that the earlier the effort, the better, and that at close distances, phone calls are crappy tools. there is no bonus for keeping in touch with a recruit, or anything like that, that would make it worth it to spend phone calls. i remember a guy who would religiously call every recruit he wanted to sign 1 time per cycle, which IMO, is a huge waste of time. but there are bigger mistakes you can make than to send around 50 calls (500 bucks) randomly to cover your bases on possible suspicions about the benefits. so you can definitely use brads method, and you will have a lower chance? of getting over taken by considering credit, and be successful in recruiting (still, better to send em in 1 cycle earlier in the process). but i dont recommend it.

I'm not suggesting you send tons of phone calls. You just send one every few cycles even if you are in the recruits top choice unless you are tight with the recruit. Yes the earlier the effort the better but if you cant get tight with the recruit and all of a sudden you have no effort at all it will bite you in the ***. I know this sounds crazy but it will help. The way the game is set up nothing stays a constant number all recruits interest is either increasing or decreasing at every cycle usually by just fractions of a point but after 5 or 6 cycles it can really make a difference. Remember this game is tottaly based on ever changing numbers and  a .1 drop and .1 gain can sometimes make a huge difference. gillispie has forgotten more about this game than I will ever know but I am 100% positive on this one.lol  Believe me just 3 to 4 calls will make a huge difference in this situation but if you can get tight with the recruit the calls will be a waist because no one will over take you without you getting a message.

+ $10 (for every phone call you avoid making based on Emy's comment)
