I've always sensed that it's bigger than a lot of people give it credit for, particularly at the guard positions.
prior to the new engine, it wasn't a factor at all (passing's impact on the scoring potential of other team mates).
in the new engine, its a significant factor, IMO. its easy not to notice it, but especially at the 1 and 2, and especially if you aren't running a motion offense, you can really feel poor passing dragging your team fg% down. i have had a couple teams that were running triangle, that were otherwise very good, and im highly confident it was our uncharacteristic lack of passing that really held us down.
my jury is still out about the importance of passing at the 3, 4, and 5, but i would assume like most things, its some sort of gradual progression downwards, so the sf is probably at least pretty important.
