First season I only had one slot to fill, so this upcoming season will be my first five man recruiting class - I wanted a season to settle in, play with the players on the roster and watch what players were doing well for other teams and figure out what sort of team I wanted to end up with rather than rush into the recruiting, over the next two years I'll replace five, then five again.
To glom off of the other thread without threadjacking, ill insert the questione. So anyone have opinions on how a d1 hunting ground at the intersection of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana is in Crum for a d prestige? And just how high ranked/what star rating can a d prestige team in d1 reach for anyway?
And my general plan up to this point has been to go for something big but if I have to settle, settle for someone who does one thing really well; pick up ace defenders ( ath, spd, def) and worry about other things secondarily. Or say a three point shooter. Or a bug man who can defend and rebound but not score etcetera. I am getting an inkling I might have to settle quite a bit more up here? What level of ratings would be "decent at d1 for a low d1 team, considering I'm not going to be getting the mind-bending players I see in the big six conferences.
your last paragraph sums up the essence of what you need to do. get that big who can't score and has no bh/pass, but can rebound and defend well enough to get you in the low end NT pool. you basically need to totally sacrifice offense in some players to get solid team defense/rebounding/passing (guards), and then give up some of those things in a few players to get some solid offense.
i think on a D prestige, you can find big who have 60 ath/90 reb/90 def/**** all else, but im not 100% positive about that. you can at least come close. with scoring, you can definitely find some good 85 spd/per kind of guards, but im not so sure about 90/90. i mean, if you think high end d2, i get scorers who are unfit for d1 because of their defense/etc, but they have 90 spd/per. so you really should be able to do it in d1, but you just cant settle for the same 50 defense i settle for (well, you could kind of get away with it for like, 1 guard, who will play backup sg and score a **** ton. those are the compromises you need to make). i would think you could at least get to 90spd/per in your primary scorer or two, but you might need to sacrifice for lower figures in your secondary scorers and such.
but you are definitely on the right track of finding guys who are specialized. and i definitely recommend a walkon or two. you need to recruit nationally, so that jacks up your scouting costs, and you need to hammer out some evals to find the high/high potentials. you are much better off to get 3 guys who can compete on a 5 man budget than to get 5 guys who can't compete!
