Out of position penalty? Topic

If someone were to create a lineup and start or field a team of all PGs or Cs or something, other than the obvious ratings distribution and perhaps some setbacks from not having as much in certain skills, does the game have any inherent penalty built in for doing this?

The reason I ask is because in the NBA SimLeagues a lot is made from playing position, who can play where, and penalties are assigned if they are out of position.

I've never seen anyone try doing this, so I wondered if there was any inherent penalty or disadvantage (other than the obvious one I mentioned) in doing it.

positions mean nothing - it is all the ratings

Used to be a penalty, but there isn't one anymore.

So you could theoretically have a team full of PGs or Cs if you were okay with having those ratings for every single one of your players?

That's an intriguing experiment I may eventually have to try.

even when there was a penalty, some folks tried it - with some success - but it was easier before potential constrained how a coach could decide to develop a player

The only thing the positions matter for are awards, which are equally meaningless to gameplay. EDIT - Potentially a role in redshirting too, though I cannot say for certain.

Don't think of them as PGs or Cs. They are all just Players with particular ratings.

Sweet. Dominant small ball or big lumbering team, here I come.

Now I really am curious to see how it could work.

Ask runningunnin if he is still around.  The username was appropriate, he made at least a couple of sweet 16's with a team of all guards in D3 Knight a few seasons back.  (The team was Anderson I believe.)

I also saw rockafella do that in Smith D3 (at least I think it was him, sorry to him if I am remembering incorrectly); and much longer ago, I don't remember the coach's name, but there was a guy who was known for creating teams of all post players.  This was before the ban on "super classes" so when he had junior and senior classes of 10-12 players they were very tough.

bow2dacowz had pretty much an all-small team in one world I was a part of for a while (I think he kept a token center and the other 11 were littles). Not sure I've ever seen it done in reverse with a bunch of posts and just a token guard or two for distribution's sake. Given what seems to be a disposition for speed in the game, that could well be "swimming upstream" so to speak.

I wonder if, given the disposition for speed you mention, a team of all speedy guards could do well in set to fast break/ full court press.

As I said, it would take a few seasons, but I may decide to find out.

Then again, right when my team is reaching it's peak in abilities, WIS woudl probably create some sort of position rules LOL.

I've seen a couple teams run like this. I played someone in the NT recently that had all pg at the 1-4 spots and a C in his starting lineup.

That is how runningunnin ran that team (fastbreak / FCP).

This was my starting 5 for a NT game this past season. It wasn't the lineup I used all season, because I mixed and matched starters a ton throughout.

Name Yr. Pos. A SPD REB DE BLK LP PE BH P WE ST DU FT TOT
Rodger Valley Jr. SG 46 75 17 31 14 69 99 72 70 83 84 75 B+ 735
Lyle Bohannon Sr. PF 68 57 73 84 89 67 11 46 35 50 85 37 C- 702
Douglas Kamensky Sr. PG 43 80 30 57 4 38 39 84 64 52 93 64 B+ 648
Kevin Hornung Jr. PG 72 84 2 69 3 35 54 68 59 40 81 79 C- 646
Vernon Grzywinski Sr. SG 66 74 5 64 15 10 54 59 56 28 85 93 C+ 609

Kamensky was at the 1; Hornung at the 2; Grzywinski at the 3, Valley at the 4; Bohannon at the 5.

Motion (uptempo) offense, 3-2 zone defense.

At Ole Miss (D1) in Tark many, many seasons ago, I played a zone defense and ran a four guard lineup with one big man.  Actually made a Sweet Sixteen or two using that setup.  Would generally get killed on the boards, but my guys were athletic and speedy enough to give the other team's bigs fits.  You definitely have to make some concessions here and there, but it's certainly fun to try.

Also at Duke a couple of seasons ago, I had a lineup that usually consisted of a PG, 2 SG's, a SF, and a PF/C.  But.......the guards I had were so good that their shortcomings were rarely ever exposed.  Lost the NT Championship to UNC with that lineup (probably should have won, but I made a couple of rookie coaching mistakes that cost me big time............dammit).
