What would be the downside to conducting these drafts with half-hour intervals and halving the total time of the draft?.
It's not like you don't know the friggin' question before your time slot comes up.
I just did my NFL draft league (NDL) in the football theme leagues forum, and based the format of that draft league on the ODL/DDL, only we did it with half hour increments. I thought it went well. Better than one hour increments. Sure there were more skips--about two a round after the 3rd or 4th rounds, but the owners who were skipped pretty much took responsibility and realized their skip was totally their fault, and no one complained once about being skipped.
Basically, if you come up with a schedule, and give each owner 24-48 hours notice when they will be picking, its nobody's fault but theirs if they are skipped. I will say that, as the "smokey" of the NDL, it is much tougher as league commish to keep up with the picks. They come twice as fast and furious. I would completely understand his reluctance to try half hour windows. Much tougher to keep page one updated. That would be the biggest reason to stay at an hour IMO. If smokey could do it though, I bet the league would be much happier with half hour windows. My eight round NFL draft started on I think a Tuesday, and ended that following Saturday. You basically cut the draft in half. I started at 9 or 10 am and ended at 9 or 10 pm. 24 picks per day. It worked. kacyon, coolmay and a couple others in both could chime in and give their thoughts...
