How so? To me it just means a decent team that just misses the playoffs won't end up with Tim Duncan or someone like that because they fluked out in the lottery. I know this is how it works in real life but we have the advantage of knowing exactly how each player's career will turn out.

My question about that is: if the 4th place team wins 20 games, and the 5th place team wins 21, isn't the 5th place team going to complain?  There is just no way to always make everyone happy.

This part is true, and maybe I'm not understanding the concept.   i guess I was thinking of the team that finishes in the bottom 3 for 2 years in a row.  He gets 1st round pick after his first bad season and drafts Michael Jordan.  Now he finishes in the bottom 3 again and now Michael Jordan goes back into the draft pool among the bottom 3 teams?

Let's keep in mind that a HUGE difference between the SIM Drafts and the IRL Drafts is that for the SIM Drafts, we already know exactly what we're getting.  There really is no "risk" involved.
I don't think anybody ever wants players put back in a Draft (not even a mini-one like we'll have now), unless there are similar circumstances where multiple teams are available.  If owners are returning, they'd keep their players (unless I'm way off on someone's thinking).

No, sorry I guess I wasn't clear. I meant that's just the way each draft would be set up. Nobody ever goes back into the draft.

It's just another option, one that I like mind you. It makes building a great team less of a crapshoot and more about drafting and trading for guys that fit your team. Owners tend to get pretty screwed in the current lottery and I think a little less randomness would be good considering there is no randomness to the careers of the players.

Actually, I'm coming from the other direction.  Precisely because there's no mystery about the players in a draft pool, I think the current level of randomness in the draft process is important.  I'm fine with all3's proposal under the current circumstances - a rare move to fix a problem - but I'd really prefer not to reduce the general degree of randomness in the draft order.  I think we'd open ourselves up to way too much tanking if you know that, say, an 0-82 record in 2002-03 will almost certainly get you Lebron.

(I say this as an owner who's both gotten lucky and been screwed at various times in the lottery.)

I think the proposal is a step in the right direction. I don't think anyone can accuse me of tanking this season especially considering how bad this years draft is compared to the draft years within a four year proximity to this draft.

I've never seen anyone just blatantly tank during the regular season, in the sense of deliberately getting a team to underperform.  (In part because we police each other.)  But what does happen quite a bit is owners completely taking teams apart and trying to rebuild from scratch through some high draft picks.  all3 does, I do it, arvid did it...it's a long-term strategy.  That kind of behavior shouldn't be rewarded with certainty in the draft.  That's all I'm saying.

I hear you but I don't think my suggestion would give any certainty. It would still be a lottery between the top 4 teams. Maybe 40-30-20-10 odds or something like that. I just hate that if you have a crappy team and get screwed in the lottery, it is extremely difficult to build a long term winner. Yeah, you can get some decent players but to win a championship(s), it's near impossible. On the other hand, if you have a decent team and luck into Tim Duncan or Shaq, you get a dynasty just because of luck. It's just tough to pay money for this and beat your head against the wall and not have much of a chance to win big. The SIM is frustrating enough :)

Anyway, it's just a suggestion to solicit conversation.
