ODL XXXIX team rosters and commentary Topic

i was really hoping to get the chance to unleash dirk in the odl and with moses on board i get that chance....i have an overwhelming advantage at the line right now and a nice 1-2 punch...the rest of the team pretty much drafts itself.....pg to pass...sg to shoot 3s...sf to rebound
5/8/2012 6:56 PM
I love it when the team drafts itself.

I was wanting to pair Barkley with Ray Allen, but I didn't think Ray Ray would fall to me in the second round.  Very happy with my team so far
5/8/2012 10:14 PM
and i like wade's 36.5% usage paired with uva's favorite version of marion: 19.5% usage, 89 def, 88-3's, 56.7%efg. love not having to worry about the sf position (my achilles heel) when in draft leagues. once barkleyand bird are gone, just two or three top sf's left that i know how to work with.
5/10/2012 12:01 AM
You know you are on the right track when you can pair a great player with any of UVA's favorites.
5/10/2012 4:12 PM
Murphy not who I was looking for but he fits my team needs pretty well, and his weaknesses- no defense, no fta's- I have covered.
5/10/2012 8:48 PM
Murphy is a good fit on pretty much any team.
5/10/2012 11:12 PM
Ryan Anderson in the third round? Yup. 202 3s, 26.4 CRB, 54.8 EFG%. With the way the sim is, he could hit 250+ 3s in his 30 mins on the court. Donyell Marshall is one of my favorite SFs to use, but Anderson is pretty close just without the defense.
Durant at SG and Anderson at SF give me a pair of 11-12 bombers that can also rebound. I've never used these seasons obviously, but the stats look good. And with Boerwinkle in the paint? I like it.

Was hoping Ryan Anderson would fall to me... On another note, anyone doing evals?

So I decided to draft Kareem with my first round choice. Last season he was on the championship team, I also have him on my 52 Mil squad and all around he gets the job done.

Kareem 44 MPG; 35 PPG; 16.6 RPG; 504 FTM/732 FTA; 4.6 APG/3.9 TOPG; 1.6 SPG/3 BPG; 2.9 FPG

29.1 Usage; 57.6 eFG%; 34.1 Creb%; 10.7 Ast%

The second round I wanted to add to the rebounding. I haven't used Mel Daniels, but his 13 RPG in the last ODL is hard to resist.

Daniels 38 MPG; 21 PPG; 17.8 RPG; 319 FTM/469 FTA; 2.1 APG/2.8 TOPG; 1.2 SPG/2.8 BPG; 3.5 FPG

21.3 Usage; 51.5 eFG%; 41 Creb%

So at this point I am only in need of two short minute subs at the PF/C spots. I had many guys on my radar including Donyell Marshall, then I shifted my focus to another player that I have yet to use. Brent Barry gives me a great three-point shooter with a stellar effective field goal percentage and high minutes.

Brent Barry 38 MPG; 14.4 PPG; 5.4 RPG/5.3 APG; 164 three's made.

16.2 Usage; 61.1 eFG%; 15.8 Creb%; 17.7 Ast%

I've got close to 10,000 minutes drafted, 27.6 Million Spent.
5/11/2012 1:13 PM
I'm in three drafts right now... one of which is a progressive draft with a cap that is now to the rounds of 30-minute time slots.  That means a lot of research.  Once that is done, I can do some analysis.
5/11/2012 4:21 PM
ljemd - LeBron James, Reggie Miller, Wes Unseld

Fantastic back court.  Even though Allen goes before Reggie in every draft, I think Reggie is better overall (unless you're planning on using a tier4 usage season, then Allen is vastly superior).  Reggie gives you higher efg% and way more ftas.  They're about even when it comes to (lack of) defense and assists.  Allen gives you a slight edge in boards.  But I'll take Miller's efg% superiority most of the time.  Paired with the King... very impressive.  Unseld is a solid big man here, giving you loads of boards.  Since Nater, Camby, Boerwinkle & Chandler were all already gone, he was about the best available in that usage range, which was perfect since you've already got 10 or 12 points tied up in your back court.  Love this start!

ncih - Dennis Rodman, Swen Nater, Tracy McGrady

You got a deal in tmac.  While he's not as good in the $52M cap, I'm a believer in him at this one... well, sort of.  I don't dig the high volume average efg% guys but he's the best of that bunch.  Worm at the 3 and Nater at the 4 or 5... you're set to dominate the glass already.  You've got a lot of options left for your 4/5 and your PG... really dig this, man.

xxevilivexx (1) - Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving

Don't like this pairing.  I don't like Erving period though there's a way to properly utilize him.  I don't believe Wilt is it.  But Wilt is Wilt, so as long as you don't screw that up... Yeah.  Really need to see your third guy to get a true feel of where you're going.

xxevilivexx (2) - Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Mel Daniels, Brent Barry

Kareem... Kareem... Kareem... I'm not sure you can get tier 2 usage 57% efg% for 3500+ minutes anywhere else.  Build around him correctly and he is amazing.  You've done well thus far with Daniels (he needs board help) and Barry (what's not to love about this guy as your 2?).

tricky24 - Michael Jordan, Shawn Kemp, Gerald Wallace

I don't like it.  Kemp is a nice compliment to Jordan, but Wallace... that makes me think that you mean to use MJ at the point (mistake) or put Wallace at the 3 (mistake).  If you had Boerwinkle, I can see Jordan at the point, but not with Wallace at the 2.  You'll play defense, but I don't like the potential advantage you gave up by taking both Jordan AND Wallace.

theyard2 - Dwight Howard, Donyell Marshall, Robert Parish

Howard is a personal sim favorite of mine (led me to two 'ships here in the ODL) so of course I dig this.  You cover Marshall's weak offensive rebounding by having two studs in Howard & Parish.  You've already got 10 usage points, too, and all at high efg%.  Howard & Parish make a nice tandem as Howard can defend Parish's man if need be.  Looking for a nice back court scorer that doesn't take away from the finely sculptured front court you've got thus far.

jethroeg - Kevin Garnett, Deron Williams, Buck Williams

I thought this was too early for Garnett, but I like what you're doing with the Williamses.  Buck's high offensive rebounding helps make up for Garnett's low... and Williams is just solid all around.  Nice 10 points of usage already, too, and reasonably nice efg% (KG brings it down).  This could go many directions, but I think I like it.

malone9975 - Charles Barkley, Ray Allen, Pau Gasol

It doesn't get much better offensively than the Round Mound of Jesus.  Gasol was a pick I initially questioned, but I think it works.  You've got either 10, 12 or 14 usage points already at an efg% that's out of this world.  You need somebody to get the ball to these guys, though!  And more boards - especially defensively - are needed.  Love the start, though.

dh555 - Moses Malone, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Johnson

Never a fan of Dirk in the sim, but with Moses, it should work.  Moses' 18% oreb makes up for Dirk's 4-5% (assuming you grab a SF with double digit offensive boards).  You've got a nice inside-outside punch there with a guy at the point who can get 'em both the ball and score plenty himself.  Assuming you use the versions of everyone I would, you're sitting at a nice efg% with 12 usage points, plenty of dimes, decent defense swappage up front... I dig this.  Really interested to see who plays the 3 for you and who gives you 3s.  Dangerous squad.

98average - Shaquille O'Neal, Marcus Camby, Kevin McHale

The Diesel is another favorite who is typically very easy to build around.  Camby is a perfect compliment up front, giving you nice boards and defense and a decent amount of dimes.  McHale is a vicious 3, giving you even more crazy efg%, good defense, and solid rebounding from the SF.  Sitting at 10.5 usage points as I see it, you've got room for a scorer but not required to spend a lot on usage, either.  Very nice start to this squad.

sappy - David Robinson, Kobe Bryant, Marques Johnson

Love the Admiral... hate Kobe paired with him.  You got to work around the Admiral's relatively lower usage like you would Barkley (assuming you're using the 55% efg version with 35% creb), and picking a high volume shooter that has mediocre efg% to pair with him is not the way to do it.  Marques is a stud and gives you either 12 or 14 usage points depending on what versions you're using.  Need boards badly and some reliable threes.

robocoach - Tim Duncan, Gary Payton, Troy Murphy

I'm becoming bigger and bigger on Duncan in the sim, but I still think his best season is 2700ish minutes and not worth this high of pick.  His second best season is borderline, though.  I really hate the Glove, though, and think he's vastly overrated in the sim (but not IRL).  What I see happening is him chucking up shot after shot when you could have Fundamental's 55% working for you.  Murphy is still nice despite the defense nerf, but you got to grab lots of offensive boards at the 2 & 3.  I love the Duncan-Murphy dynamic.  I'd love it more with someone like KJ, Nash or

scudmissle - Dwyane Wade, Shawn Marion, Walt Frazier

okay, uva.  This works so well for so many reasons...   If I guess correctly, you're at 12 usage points, which is perfect with 2 guys left to draft.  Strong back court rebounding.  A touch of threes from everywhere... good efg% from your 2nd & 3rd options (above average for Wade).  Good defense.  Low fouls.  Pretty straight up with turnovers.  Nice start.  What you gonna do up front?

ginandjuice - Kevin Durant, Tom Boerwinkle, Ryan Anderson

This is probably my favorite squad thus far.  Here's what's really cool about combining Durant & Anderson:  Durant has almost no offensive boards but a ton of defensive boards for a SG.  Anderson has a mediocre amount of defensive boards for a 3 but lots of offensive ones.  Durant's new season with almost 55% efg is ridiculous.  Boerwinkle makes both of them better and provides lots of boards.  Got 9 usage points right now, so I'm interested to see what you do at the 4 and the 1.  Love this squad so far, though.

tarheel1991 - Magic Johnson, Andrew Bynum, Clyde Drexler

I'm intrigued but not entirely sold on this squad yet.  12 usage points is nice.  Magic & Glide are a nice back court pair, and bynum certainly has potential... a lot of potential, actually... I don't know.  As I said... I'm intrigued.  I expect nothing less than a playoff squad challenging for a division crown from you, so I guess I'll buy into this squad now.

ashamael - Karl Malone, Tyson Chandler, Steve Nash, Horace Grant

I am and will still be low on defensive boards with this squad.  I will say this... the lowest efg% of my starters is going to be 56.7%.  You should be scared.

garyman - Jason Kidd, Bill Walton, Manu Ginobili

I love the back court!  Walton is nice, too.  You've got a dominant start on the defensive glass... a little worried about the offensive glass, however.  Good thing you still have two picks at positions where you can load up on the offensive boards left to go.  I'm looking at 9 usage points, so you got some scoring to grab somewhere while you're at it.  I really like this so far and can't wait to see who you grab next.

ncmusician_7 - Ben Wallace, Scottie Pippen, Mookie Blaylock

First time I've seen nc wander into the ODL... and I'm expecting big things out of this squad.  Defense is the immediate impression followed by some smooth operators offensively.  Wallace is the man... best rebounder this side of Rodman.  100 defense ain't no joke, either.  Pippen has become one of the best SGs in the sim for complete game.  Mookie is a steal (haha) this late in the third... assuming you use the versions I think you are, though, you need a lot of scoring.  I'm seeing only 6.5 usage points right now (possibly 8.5, but I don't like that mookie as much).  You should be able to grab that offense pretty easily, however... a tier 3 & tier 4 combo at the 3 & 4 (or 5) and you're golden.  Can't wait to see the whole picture.

coachcroft - Larry Bird, Hakeem Olajuwon, Fat Lever

I don't like it.  I might like it if Bird is playing the 2, however.  We'll see what you do, but I think Larry will have a legendary fat nightmare.

banditone - Paul Pierce, Kevin Love, Bob McAdoo

I'm done betting against you.  And honestly, I really love this squad!  Average efg% from the Truth and K-love are off-set by what they bring to their respective positions on the boards.  McAdoo is a really, really nice fit with a board-lord as good as K-Love.  I'm seeing 14 usage points here, so you can easily grab some lower-usage specialists to flesh this out even further.  Oh... and one word:  Threes.  Deadly squad.

mikee1 - Artis Gilmore, Chris Paul, Amare Stoudemire

Nice pick on A-Train... almost worthy of being called a steal.  cp3 is a steal.  Stoudemire fits this squad well.  I'm seeing 10-12 usage points here with many of your bases covered.  I'm pretty stoked about this one.  Your SF is going to be really important to the success of this particular squad.  I know who I think you should pick.  We'll see if you actually do, though.

eleibowitz - Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, Elton Brand

This is about where Oscar should go.  Russell, too.  You got a steal in Brand.  I'm seeing 9 points of usage, so you need a tad more offense, but I'm a freakin' fan of what you got thus far.  Solid efg% from your two scorers.  Solid rebounds at every position.  Some threes at a reasonable usage at the 2 and some more boards underneath... I love it!!!

bluenote75 - Jerry Lucas, Chauncey Billups, Larry Nance

I'm not as big of a fan of this squad, though.  Love Billups.  Love Nance.  Like Lucas.  Just don't see them together for some reason.  I'm thinking you've got 7 points of usage right now... possibly 9.  You need more offense.  And rebounds.  Lots of rebounds.  Lucas isn't really enough and both Nance & Big Shot are low for their positions.  But you've got room to work!

ncih (1) - John Stockton, Dikembe Mutombo, Bob Lanier, Anfernee Hardaway

Glen, you've done some great things with your teams this year, man.  I'm not sure how this will play out, but I'm seeing 9-11 points of usage so far with some really, really nice efg%, good defense, and solid boards.  A lot depends on your SF, however.  Really looking forward to seeing how you finish the puzzle with him.

There you go.  It's quick, and it's ugly.  Much like your mom.
5/11/2012 11:46 PM
Now this strikes me as a perfectly reasonable question:

How the hell can 'ol Cornbread have over 700 FTA's on 18% usage? Now I know he was on great NBA Actor on a team that the NBA brass (and Officals) literally jerked off to, but he would need to be fouled on every possession all season for that to happen.
