Someone signed to a ML contract only has three years to get to the majors? Why would anyone give an 18 year old that contract?

No, they have unlimited time to get to the majors, Sergei could have kept him in the minors for as long as he'd wanted.  Or until he became a minor-league FA...which I've never bothered to understand because it only applies to crap players. 

But once they get to the "unassigned" stage that happens post-trade, they can only be assigned to a major league team.  Works the same as if you had him in the majors and then tried to demote him...that in-between land between teams functions like a ML placement, not a transition between minors.

Back in the day you could sign someone to a ML contract, then drop him from the 40...so he only burned one year.  They plugged that hole...which had been awesome for rule-v purposes if you had a deep minors.  Now, anytime you remove someone from the 40 they have to pass through waivers first.
