And actually, I disagree with you...I think only ITAOTS and Holland, 1945 really lend themselves to covers...the others are just way too dependent on Mangum's insanity to really work.  I mean, Oh Comely is the darkest, most twisted part of the album, but you give that to anyone else who isn't just absolutely committed to it, and it totally fails.

Actually the whole King of Carrot Flowers suite would probably work, too.

New Menomena this week. I have a friend who is reporting that he believes it is one of the most important albums in the past 30 years (huge claim). Pitchfork loved it though...
I'll give it a listen.
I did...didn't jump out at me, but I didn't really dig into it all that much.

The whole thing is just amazing...I'll go six months or so without listening to it, think that I've overrated it in my mind, and then put it on and be absoultely transfixed by it.
I don't know that I'll ever find an album that has that much staying power for me.

I've heard a few covers of Oh Comely and Two Headed Boy Part II to know that they can be good. Nobody can hold a candle to Mangum, but there are some decent ones out there. THBP2 is probably my favorite track, at least at the moment. The lead singer from Brand New did a decent one.

Wow...nice work, Robusk.

Band of Horses:  Not surprised.  Those dudes seem to have just stumbled on to two album's worth of awesome melodies and a decent sound...but you don't get the impression that they're all that into pushing their sound to new (interesting places).

BB:  Again, not surprised...only because despite loving a lot of Shins music, I've always gotten the impression that Mercer is a bit of a douche.  The two times I've seen them, he's seemed seriously disinterested.

That's a real surprise about Beach House--I like them, but don't love them...wouldn't have expected them to be awesome.

I can't believe your dumbass missed Heartless Bastards--that would have been the top one of all the ones you've listed for me to catch.  I've only seen video (including an awesome Austin City Limits performance), but they seem to really kick *** live.
Beach House has so much polish to their albums I just doubt they'd be able to replicate it live.

And I agree that the bottom will fall out on Band of Horses and their sound will just wear thin.
Yeah...  but I think the raw elements in them playing live improved the sound.

BLE:  What are your thoughts on The Ettes?
I like them...a lot.
I thought you might.  They seem like your style.

The vocalist, Coco (not her real name), was actually one of my good friends growing up and we still try and hang out whenever we are in the same town.  Just spent New Year's with her in Nashville actually.  She is a real firecracker and a lot of fun.  She hasn't changed a bit since they started to take off.  Her boyfriend is the bassist and is working on a side project with my best friend.

I really like the direction their sound is taking.
Firecracker? You just aged yourself into cbriese territory.
That's true...can't believe I let that one go.
Yeah.  It is pretty bad.  I couldn't come up with a good word...  and she says weird stuff like that all the time so it sounded more relevant in my head.

Seeing The National on Tuesday.  Ahann:  Didn't you say you saw them recently?  What am I in for?
7/28/2010 2:56 PM
They sucked.

But I saw them two years ago and thought they were awesome.  I'm not sure if the difference was them or me, but I think it was them.  I mean, they're fantastically tight, it just seemed way too forced and performancey--including the planned crowd surfing during Mr. November.   Kind of the exact opposite of what I think Heartless Bastards are probably like.

How come no one talked about The XX album last year?  Best album in ages.

The new Menomena is up on emusic. Listening to it right now and it's pretty incredible.

Best Coast came out today, haven't listened to the whole album yet but I enjoyed their single.

And finally, if you guys are into Deerhunter, their 7" is on their site for free. www.halcyondigest.com/revival, type "tapereel" in the password box and then click on the tape reel in the graphic to download the mp3s.
Nevermind.  I was searching for New Menomena not Menomena.
