#18 PF, #69 Overall, ****; no promises. Terry McClure will be seeing the floor this year, due to my limited stable of big men, but he could use some work on his rebounding. His low post rating will never be great, but I'm hoping that he makes up for it enough in other ways to offset the lack of finesse. Not a likely candidate for the NBA.
I would say that McClure certainly did find other ways to make up for the limited low post rating - he graduates with several spots in the record book and with some very prestigious awards. He worked out very well and I do think at this point that he is likely to be drafted, after all. He definitely is not a star on offense, but can work as a complementary piece, with a low distribution. Once I really de-emphasized his role on offense, the team took off.

#4 C, #26 Overall, *****, Mr. Maryland; declined 10 minutes. The prize of the class, Matthew Slick is basically ready to see the floor right now...no assembly required. He has no areas of high potential, unfortunately, beyond athleticism. Still, his low potential area is FT shooting, and that's already at a reasonable level (should be a C+ or so). His speed will limit him to the C spot, along with his perimeter and ballhandling skills. He should thrive there, though. His stamina will keep him from logging much more than 20 minutes per game, at any point in his career, but he should be effective when playing.

I would not have predicted Slick's early departure, but he really has topped out. He was one of our rocks on offense this year and will be dearly missed by the team - he was extremely polished in all of the position skills and truly was only limited by his stamina.

thanks, jdno.

---------

I know my targets and I expect a battle. The one thing I will not be doing is overextending myself by going for a home run class. I remember LSU's mistake and will not be repeating it. I will go for a double and look for my opportunity to supplement this year's recruits with recruits in later years.

---------

The thing is, even if as a player you've topped out, if you're going to be a 2nd round pick anyways why not enjoy being the Big Man on Campus for one more year? It doesn't make much sense...but I guess we'll see where the guys are drafted.

[edit:]

Having now seen where guys were drafted, they were right to leave. I am amazed that every one of the six players leaving the Terps was drafted, and all but Bane went in the first round. Slick went 5th overall...that is decidedly worth more than being BMOC.

#2 PG, #22 overall, *****; no promises. Bobby Jaco will be a SG for me, and a damn good one. He's on the verge of starting - definitely challenging Harrison Parsons for the role right off the bat. It doesn't hurt that he already knows the system. I was lucky to get him without a challenge, because he's a great player - though his defense will not be outstanding, in terms of our recent history, but solid enough. Better than the great Richard Whittaker, an SG who played the PG slot, and one of my favorite recruits of all time.

#79 C, unranked overall, JuCo Jr., *; no promises. Wilbur Teed is being brought in to eat up some minutes for the next two seasons. He's nothing special but may improve pretty well, and he should be able to see the floor for the requisite 10 minutes or so, in order to fulfill his role. I'm glad to have him, even though he's no prize, really.

#1 SF, #4 overall, *****; promised the start, promised 15 minutes. Oh man...I never get top tier SFs. This is an enormous signing. I wrestled Nolan Lyons away from Syracuse. I expected a battle against them for him and I got one. I couldn't be more thrilled. He is fantastic. A surefire pro. I hope he's around for his junior season. A senior year is probably a pipe dream.

#56 C, #252 overall, **; redshirting. I stole Brice Diehl from Virginia at the last minute because VandyDave was being impertinent by actually giving me a battle for Millard Hargraves (a PG who will be signing soon). I kind of wanted a big man to redshirt and have as a 4-year backup, and had lost a battle to St. John's when I wasn't willing to spend more than my initial investment in Eric Johnson, and Diehl suited my needs. He'll be slow for the Press, unfortunately, but otherwise he's a nice player (kind of a more athletic Mike Mardesich type). I don't expect that he'll ever be anything outstanding but I wanted to show VD that in the DC area, I am the Big Bad Wolf and UVA's house is made of straw. He whined a bit about it and I reminded him of Raymond Kovac, who I still wish I had signed, and who is now a junior. As far as I'm concerned, UVA shouldn't be pursuing any five-star recruits that are within 200 miles of me, let alone signing them. He should probably step lightly around the four-star players, too, and not commit too hard.

Also, 7'2" and 269 pounds? What a beast!

#7 PG, #33 overall, *****; promised the start, promised 15 minutes. While he hasn't technically signed yet, Millard Hargraves will be joining the team officially within a few hours - I pulled ahead maybe $20k ago and decided that since I wasn't looking to fill the last scholarship, it'd be a waste not to just use the remaining funds...and I know that UVA is already out of resources, so I figured I'd get him up now, since I have a free moment. Hargraves is already an outstanding pass-first point guard. He will become an outstanding all-around point guard...though I suppose he could top out in terms of his perimeter rating somewhere in the 70s, that's still just fine...look at James Bourget, who school early and was drafted with less athleticism than Hargraves. If, somehow, this player stays for 4 years, I predict that he will be the assists leader of all time for UMD.
