#11 SG, #52 Overall, ****; no promises. Harrison Parsons is a SG/SF player who'll be starting off as my backup SG (Marshall will be switching over to backup SF) as his athleticism improves. His overall potential as a SF depends on his ceiling on that rating. Overall, I quite like him. I hope his speed tops off in the mid 90s or better, rather than at the bare minimum (90). His defense is a big variable, as is his passing and stamina, but making the NBA for Parsons is certainly within reasonable expectation. The question is whether he's a first round pick or not...or at least it should be, I hope. Also if he's an early entry.
Parsons turned out to be an early entry. He never fully delivered on his promise but I guess he ultimately had a decent junior year. It would've been helpful to have him back for one more season, but there's not much that one can do about it in the curreent environment. I wish stats did matter, because then I would certainly have another year of this guy.

#1 C, #5 Overall, *****; no promises. Granted, Adam Gill doesn't have the prospective improvement of the other members of his incoming class, but that's because he's already at a very good level for a center. I don't think I've ever had a recruit that was quite this highly ranked before. If I could change anything, I would start with his FT shooting percentage being in the 80s, potential on passing being "high," or FT shooting potential being "high," in that order. With that said, he is a great prospect and should quickly find a place in the rotation, and contribute to the Terps' future. His overall effectiveness will depend on the ceiling for improvement on athleticism and stamina.
Gill has performed well, and he topped out, so I expected him to leave. He'll be missed, no question, but keeping the #5 Overall recruit around for 3 seasons isn't bad.

#79 C, unranked overall, JuCo Jr., *; no promises. Wilbur Teed is being brought in to eat up some minutes for the next two seasons. He's nothing special but may improve pretty well, and he should be able to see the floor for the requisite 10 minutes or so, in order to fulfill his role. I'm glad to have him, even though he's no prize, really.
Teed was an absolute waste of a scholarship, and I'm glad to see him go.

#2 SF, #8 Overall, *****; no promises. I was expecting more of a fight from Georgetown when I went after Ernest Bold. I had forgotten to recruit for the first two cycles and I had meant to go after Bold all along, and Georgetown was alone in his considering list. Since I had two players go pro early on me, I knew I had equal funding to Georgetown, equal distance, and a slight edge in prestige (my A+ to his A-). The Hoyas had gotten into a few recruiting battles, though, and were tied up in a way that I wasn't yet, so I took the lead quickly and he never took it back. Eventually I put a few extra dollars in just to kick him off to have Bold sign right away, which worked.

Anyways, Bold is exactly the kind of SF I described at the beginning of the year as being worth recruiting. I firmly believe that there are only about five of these per year, and when they are geographically close to you, you have to act on it. He'll never be a speed demon, but he should be fast enough to keep up with most opponents. He'll never be a great rebounder either, but he shouldn't be an embarassment there. What he should be, ultimately, is a good scoring SF. It helps that he played in our system in high school, too.

#10 C, #30 Overall, *****; no promises. I sort of stumbled into John McMahon, a player I had not targeted until when I showed up at 10:50 PM on the first recruiting day (oops), nobody was on his considering list. I had to beat Ohio State for his services but they were only really taking a flier on him and didn't invest much. His only real weakness is FT shooting - otherwise he's fairly fast and adequately athletic for a C, and will improve somewhat, and his position skills are all polished already. I like his passing.

#20 C, #70 Overall, ****; no promises. I might try to redshirt Phillips but I'm certain that won't work. This is the fellow who I spoke of before the season as the attendee of my (high school) alma mater (and who will now attend my undergraduate alma mater). The guard, I will post for the record, because I didn't get into the fight over him in spite of really, really wanting him - but that same guard probably got me Ernest Bold because Georgetown is having a very difficult time wresting him away from St. Joseph's (Philadelphia). Derek Phillips is a really solid big man who will develop his defense and other position skills, and become quick and athletic for a C (or adequate for a PF in both areas) and who will pass very well for his role. Due to his stamina, he is a likely career backup, but he will be valuable in that role. If he agrees to the redshirt, which is very unlikely, he'll have a better chance of starting as a junior and a senior, but he should never average more than 20 minutes per game. I had to take him away from Penn State, which had a huge number of vacancies and didn't want to stretch itself too thinly by getting into a battle with a team that had a distance advantage and a large prestige advantage (A+ to C+).
4/8/2010 6:31 AM
I'm still wrapping up my battle with Michigan State over a transfer (from Syracuse) sophomore SG who lives in Pennsylvania, 130 miles from me and more than 300 miles from the Spartans. Penn State was knocked out early. I have distance, prestige, and about $30k in funds , and I'm currently in the lead, so I predict that I will be winning this one without a problem. Nonetheless, I won't yet post him. I will post the guard I really wanted, who will either attend Georgetown or St. Joe's. He would've been really fun to watch grow, but I'll keep track of him nonetheless. It was very hard to keep myself from entering into this battle, but there were initially 4 teams on him.

#30 PG, #152 Overall, ***. If his athleticism, defense, and perimeter have high-high potential, he'll be ridiculous. Even if they don't, he should be a very good pass-first PG. His rebounding is good for the position, too.

Transfer therefore unranked, but he certainly would be a five-star guy. promised 10 minutes.Based on my scouting of him, Forbush has low potential in rebounding, low post, and shot blocking. I don't think I got word on his FT potential, but I doubt it's good. He's got average potential basically everywhere else.

Anyways, Roger Forbush is a nice player, though his stats from his freshman year are awful. He's adept at the Press but unfamiliar with the Flex, so won't have a high distribution at all but will be able to see the court as our backup SG. Eventually I'm sure he'll be the starter, and he should do a good job after he's been in our program for a little while. I wish he rebounded better, and I'm going to pine mildly for Edmiston, but that's okay.
4/8/2010 2:57 PM
Well, I didn't remember to recruit on time and I wound up getting better rated guys than I probably would have targeted if I'd been looking to take fewer risks. Actually, I probably would've wound up in a knock-down, drag-out fight with St. Joe's over Edmiston [note: he went to Georgetown, along with the #2 PF who they won a battle for against Kentucky, and a senior transfer, with four open spots], and lost Bold to Geogetown. I was also thinking of targeting a local big for a redshirt, but he was already considering someone before I jumped on McMahon, who has few flaws besides FT shooting and could even wind up being a pro.

All in all, I'm quite pleased with how this turned out. Also, I've got that $30k sitting around, about to be reduced by 75% but that will leave me with about $7,500 for next year, and that's not insignificant.

Self Grade: A

We're deep enough for this year...I think we have a chance to do really well, in spite of the losses of Gill and Parsons (and Knipp).
