We were good enough to win the Championship last year, but did not make it far in the NT.  No worries - we're still an A+ prestige program, though we have a few guys to replace this year...

Every program needs to rebuild sooner or later. Hopefully that's all we're going through and you'll have the ship righted next season. I'm still behind you!

*****; international therefore unranked and unscoutable.  We beat Nebraska for Yazid Ahmed.  I'm not sure what his potential is other than stamina, which has high potential.  If he's got high potential in speed and ballhandling, as well, then he'll be a very good SG.

What's the point of being on the team if I don't get a real chance to contribute? Too bad, I really liked it here, but I'm not going to waste my time anymore.

If we had been able to redshirt Ahmed, he wouldn't be transferring right now.  I'm sure he'll be a very prized recruit for some team that runs the Flex/Man (and still quite prized by a team that runs either one...he's no lower than a C-minus on any offense or defense).

Ahmed would have made a significant contribution next year.  Granted, we had no early entries (thank goodness) but with his departure we are only 2 deep at the guard spot and he would've been Maas' backup, and then probably started the next year.

Oh well, it happens sometimes.

Newlin was a key contributor to some good teams.  He was an efficient point guard who would have made a decent small forward, as well.  We didn't expect much out of him offensively, but he did what he could to help the team with high percentage shots (presumably layups) and a great assist-to-turnover ratio.

Theodore Mizer was a great signing and a wonderful 4-year player who probably should have gone pro as a junior, or sooner.  I'm disappointed that we were not able to go further this year, because Mizer was definitely good enough to be a high pick before this, and came back, which I was not expecting.  A three-year starter and multi-year star, Mizer contributed as a freshman to a National Championship winning team.  He will be missed, and impossible to replace in the short term.

Richard Badillo was a significant contributor as a 4-year backup big man who defended, rebounded, and got a few garbage baskets.  He had essentially no offensive game, but did a good job on the other side of the court, and pulled in more than 1 offensive rebound per game.  Badillo's contributions were steady and consistent throughout his career.  I don't know what his potential was, but I suspect he didn't reach it due to his work ethic.  It's questionable whether he will be drafted

#20 PG, #146 Overall, **; JuCo Jr., no promises.  Jeffrey Simpson looks like more of a SG than a PG, and will probably wind up being a decent spot-up shooter before he leaves UMD in two seasons.  He's not a liability on defense or with rebounding, but his ballhandling isn't great for his position.  He was local and came fairly cheaply, though, and the team could use some guard depth. so no complaints.

Simpson helped our depth when we needed it most, during his junior season.  This year, he produced so well in a backup role that we could not justify replacing him with Yazid Ahmed (which ultimately cost us Ahmed).  He was a good defender, on top of that, and grew a lot as a player over these two seasons.

So, looking ahead to next season...

We will want to recruit 2-3 guards...2 for depth next year, and 1 for depth the year afterwards.  Whyte will be starting at PG and Maas will be starting at SG, again.  We know what we're getting from those guys.

Ward Davis will be starting at SF and backed up by Rolando Nocera, so we're set at that position for at least one year.  There's a chance if the available guard talent is bad enough and there's a compelling local SF, that we might go for him and plug him in at backup SG for a year or two.

Jerry Foss will anchor the frontcourt for a year, joined in the starting lineup by Sean Russell.  I'm not sure who will be the primary scorer between the two - Foss has the speed to dominate a lot of players, and is a better FT shooter, but Russell has a bit of an edge in athleticism and low post skills.  They will be backed up by a somewhat underwhelming Walter Murphy.  We will want probably 2 bigs, but depending on talent in the area could go for 3.

I look forward to starting a series with you, thought it may take a few seasons of games @ Georgetown before a game in College Park is an auto win for the Terps.

I also look forward to the days when I'll have the prestige to challenge for the best of local recruits.
