#5 PG, #29 Overall, *****; no promises.  John Whyte is slightly unrefined offensively but that will change.  He will be a pass-first PG with good (but not great) speed and great athleticism, who will be an excellent rebounder for the position, and he should be a good defender who will only struggle against the quickest guards.

John Whyte had a very solid career for the Terps, developing from a pass-first guy to an early scoring option.  Interestingly, the fellow who ultimately ended Whyte's collegiate career was not significantly faster than him.  Whyte will be exceedingly difficult to replace in the short term, as we don't currently have a PG on the team, and he was the ACC player of the year.  I wish more guys agreed to redshirt when they'll only be picking up scrap minutes as freshmen.  Oh well.  Whyte has a fairly good chance to be drafted, though I'm not quite sure how highly.

Whyte's lack of speed really does hurt him as a pro, even more than the mediocre shooting ability.

#15 PG, #60 Ovearll, ****; some guaranteed minutes, but currently in a "battle" with Virginia for him - he'll sign at some point but VandyDave does not give up on quixotic ventures...I am so certain of the signing that I'm just going to put him up here even though it hasn't happened yet.  Anyways, his big shortcoming is his work ethic.  If that were at 30 instead of 15 he'd be an absolute slam dunk of a starting guard, for as long as he chose to stay.  As it is, he probably won't develop all that much, but he's already pretty good when ignoring system IQ, so could be a Terrell Stoglin (as a Freshman, if reading this in the future) type, coming off the bench and looking for his own shot.

[edit:] he signed at the 2 PM cycle.

Unsurprisingly, given his work ethic, Maas regressed in rebounding even while he grew to some extent in other areas.  If he'd had a starting WE of 30 or so, he would've progressed into a professional.  As he is now, I doubt that he gets drafted (though it is possible...).  Nonetheless, he scored well over 1,000 points for the Terps as an athletic sharpshooter who played good defense.  That's a good career, any way you look at it.

#3 PF, #24 Overall, *****; no promises.  Jerry Foss is a role player.  He'll never be an offensive threat of note, but he will defend and rebound well, and won't turn over the ball too often.  In other words, he's an ideal teammate for a more scoring-focused big man (like a Theodore Mizer, for instance), and a great complementary part.  If we're very lucky, he might even stay for 4 years, due to his offensive shortcomings.

We were very lucky, and Foss stayed for 4 years.  In his senior season, he lead the ACC in blocks (and was 2nd in the country, behind some dude from Maine who came in at 2.2 per game).  He was, as predicted, the ideal teammate, complementing more offensively inclined players and getting garbage points.  Foss will be extremely difficult to replace, as his combination of speed and athleticism, shot blocking and decent FT shooting, and lack of true weaknesses in his game is simply a rare skillset.  I expect he will be a draft pick in a few days.

#2 SF, #6 Overall, *****; no promises.  Obviously, replacing Jesse Besaw is not an easy job, and Ward Davis should not be expected to be as good of a player as our dearly departed star, but he'll be quite good.  There's no way he becomes as dynamic of a scorer as Besaw, and he's not as fast as Besaw, but he should defend well, rebound decently, and score with consistency.  I foresee him averaging something between 12 and 15 points per game as a senior, if he stays that long.  Also, he'll probably be contributing more minutes than Besaw did...

Ward Davis declared for the draft early.  He was one of the team's stars, so will be tough to replace, but we do have Rolando Nocera ready for the starting role.  Davis' surprisingly placement in the team's 3pt% history is purely due to his freshman year, when he was ridiculously efficient at that particular aspect of his game.  That did not last, but school history will remember him if not for anything else than for the aftereffects of that year.

#10 C, #27 Overall, *****; ineligible.  As an ineligible player, there's no guarantee that Sean Russell shows up on campus this year (and if he does go JuCo, it could be anywhere in the country, so might render him harder to sign even with the money already invested in him).  If he does, we're looking at eventually having a pre-developed 7 foot hulk with a decent offensive game and a very promising defensive presence.  Russell could stand to improve his FT shooting, and with his high potential there, maybe he'll actually be able to (I remember a time when I brought almost every player on my team up to an A+, but the rules changed).

I don't know how much more improvement Russell had in him.  I assume enough that he would've been a first-rounder with another year or two, so if this were real, he would have cost himself a guaranteed money contract by leaving early, a la Jordan Williams.

You're going to have one crap-load of recruiting cash this season. I wish I could have made it to NCSU this season to get in on all the cash you guys reeled in, but I guess a NT appearance wasn't enough. One or two more seasons I suppose.

- Excellent ball handling skills - probably not going to see much in the way of improvement.
- Looked shakey at the free throw line - the fundamentals look solid, with time and coaching, he could really show some improvement.
- Not someone I depend on to grab a board with the game on the line - probably not going to see much improvement.
- Above average student in the classroom and on the court.
- Tremendous athlete - with the right lifting/conditioning program, he could improve.
- Doesn't look comfortable with his back to the basket - I don't see any more upside here.
- Excellent defensive fundamentals - I'd expect to see decent improvement.
- Just doesn't have a good instinct for blocking shots - still has decent upside with proper coaching.
- Decent passer - with more experience I expect to see TREMENDOUS improvement.
- Pretty good shape - personally, I don't see much upside in terms of his conditioning.
- Excellent outside shooter - I'm just not sure we're going to be able to help him get much better.

International therefore unranked, *****; no promises.  I hope Yazzie has decent potential in speed. I guess we'll get a more definitive picture after the first exhibition. We needed a guard, and we went and got this International guy because UConn had 6 open spots and we didn't want to battle them on multiple recruits, and all of the good guards were up in Big East territory.

#3 SG, #9 Overall, *****; no promises.  Raymond Brown could play either SG or SF.  I'm not wild about his Ball Handling as an SG, and I'm not happy about his Athleticism as an SF.  Between those two issues, he'll likely wind up a reserve.  Otherwise, he doesn't have any real weaknesses, and has some significant strengths.

#2 C, #15 Overall, *****; no promises.  Crispin was in my backyard so I had to get him, even if we hadn't had any big men go pro early, or whatever.  I do want to mention that there is no such thing as "North Bethesda."  It's Rockville.  The local merchants just think North Bethesda sounds fancier.  Also, Crispin is awesome.

#5 SF, #11 Overall, *****; promised 10 minutes.  We beat UConn for Edgar Maloof, but were in such a battle with them for his services that we didn't go after a proper 5th recruit in spite of having a ludicrous budget, this year.  Maloof is a good player but won't be an offensive star for us, since he doesn't have the low post skills or a phenomenal shooting touch.  I could be wrong, but I think he'll be a starting quality role player, who may leave early for the NBA.

#28 SG, #150 Overall, *; promised no redshirt.  The reason we were on Mark Biel in the first place was that we had about $30k left after wrapping up Maloof, but there simply weren't many decent unsigned players left.  Tulsa had five guys considering them for one or two spots, and Biel was one of them - I scouted every state that had more than 30 unsigned players left in it.  Biel had decent potential, so I figured I'd throw my extra money at him and see if we could get him as a redshirt.  After Biel turned down the redshirt (and the scholarship that went with it), I went back and forth on whether to offer him a scholarship.  Ultimately I figured there's a chance that we don't have any early entries this year, in which case we'd be trying to recruit for one spot with the funding for one spot, plus whatever the conference brings in in the postseason.  Alternately, if we had him, all of that postseason cash would bleed over at 100% to the next season, which would be a big advantage.  I figured we could use a 4 year depth SG/SF, and that he'd probably transfer if none of our guards leave early anyways.  It was a calculated risk.  UConn signed a point guard I would have very highly preferred.

According to his evaluations, Biel has very high potential in perimeter and ballhandling, but only normal high on passing, so he'll probably be a designated jumpshooter after he matures a bit.
