New Team Icon League--looking to start in 1981 Topic

obviously, all are welcome, but I don't expect too many of the '77 crew to join in here......I do expect a bit of a wait to fill this, but if it takes bringing in 20 people that have never done an Icon, that's what it will be

I'm in the '77 icon and I'm in.  All you need to do is take a different team and you have basically an entirely different draft pool.

they are not defunct, that will be deleted....they were just untaken franchises in the Icon League I was in before...from which I basically just copied the rules from

Year 1 draft order will be brought to us by random.org
very bad idea, methinks. Losing franchise are already seriously disadvantaged (see any of the three Icon leagues I'm in). I would suggest basing order on winning percentage or something like that.

define losing franchise, because every team in the league has had ups and downs since 1981....if this were starting in the 90's, it would be more clear cut that some teams needed help

look at the Icon League going through the 90's right now...which team has dominated the decade? the Reds....not exactly a team you think of as a powerhouse in those years

are any of you saying you will join this league if the original draft order is created differently?

Is this a regressive or progressive league?

progressive

Do you start with the 81 rosters and then draft every season after that?

no...full draft starting from scratch (minus Team Icons and such which are assigned to their teams)

meaning Baltimore could draft Fernando in 1981, but Lou Whitaker is automatically a Tiger

ok.  Funny, you should use that example.  I;ll join with Detroit to have a couple of my favourite players. ..

great to have you...

I would join if it were weighted in some way.

I'm not trying to screw up your plans, if anything, like abfball, I love me some icon simmage. I run five Icon teams, more than anybody (2 each in both the original and the 70s league, and one in the 40s league). But I manage the Pirates in the original icon mainly to help keep the league going when no one would take them over after they had been abandoned. I do my best each year, but that team doesn't have 1/3 the options my Yankees have in each draft, so I end up with a losing record pretty much every year.

I'm only trying to help here, so don't take my comments the wrong way. I'd love to see this get off the ground, and I just started a league with a bunch of guys I work with (not an icon) and I know I could convince some of them to join this league. I'd just hate to do all the research and get them in, only to see the league fold after 2 or 3 seasons. We weighted the draft based on 10-year winning % in both Icons, and that seemed to work fairly well. Just my two cents.

I'm taking a long look at what each team can somewhat expect to be able to build in the 80's.....when I get done with that, I will see if there are teams that really do require a draft boost to get going.....

what I don't want to do is help the Mariners (just an example) in 1981 just because in the 1990's the Yankees have what seems like better options......
7/30/2011 6:42 AM
perhaps the combination of weighted and random....

teams ranked 1-26 based on winning % over a certain span of time...then teams 1-25 are given another set of numbers (27 through 51), then teams 1-24 are given another set of numbers (52 through 75)....until only team 1 is left (and given # 351)....

this gives the so called weaker teams more chances to have the top picks, but also allows the fates to give the higher end teams a chance to move up the board

I have already ranked the teams 1 to 26 and if this idea gets much support, I would run the random drawing soooner rather than later so that owners could know ahead of time when their franchises drafted......maybe the Twins become much more appealing if they hold the top selection.....

So, is this league dead?
