There's plenty of things to do during the postseason if you're not in the playoffs.  Primarily, planning for next season.
  • Promote your minor league prospects.
  • Protect potential 6 year minor league free agents that you wish to retain by placing them on the 40.
  • Take a look at who your departing ML free agents are.  If you want to keep them, sign them to extensions.
  • Take a look at who your arb guys will be next season.  Decide who you plan to keep, who you plan to release.
  • Take a look at who your potential option guys are next season.  Consider what your contingiency plays are for player/mutual options guys who choose to leave.
  • Put together your potential 25 man roster for next season, based on who you currently have in your organization.  Determine whioch prospects may be promoted to the majors next season.  Determine what your needs are, based on who's leaving or where your weaknesses were this season.
Really, if you're just looking at the post-season as two weeks of total inactivity for your team, you're just doing yourself a disservice.  In real-life, ML GM's start planning for next season the day after the regular season ends.

In the land of "why aren't these 5 games series 7 games?", I'd hate to see anything that makes the playoffs shorter.
