Shorten the draft Topic

Then you've given a shot to re-sign him during the exclusive FA period, just as if he was a departing 6-year MiL FA.

Even more reason to shorten the draft.  You'll never lose young players to retirement and you can always go to tryout camp to fill your roster.   Save that extra mil on non-BL prospect position players and load up an IFA.

I personally like it at 25, beacause I sign all of my draftees who will sign for slot money, and move players up through the system and never have a problem stocking out my minor league teams. If they changed it, I'm sure I would figure it out as well, but I think tec nailed more of what the problem is with the minor league player retirements. Fixing that, I think would fix lack of a pool for MILB roster filler. Also, like tec's idea of tying DITR to number of low round draftees signed and only having DITR apply to drafted players.

I think the point is lost.  You no longer have to worry about stocking your minor league teams thru the draft because of tryout camp positions players.   Owners already ignore non-BL prospect pitchers due to tryout camp for pitchers.  Now they'll do the same with position players and spend that extra 1m or so on an IFA.  Which is fine but 75% of the draftees aren't going to be signed by "smart" owners.   There's just no need to allocate that money to non-prospects under the current system.

Yeah, I looked at my last draft in Coop and saw that I spent 900k on position player bonuses that I wouldn't have doled out with tryout camp players.   My 5th rounder on down.  None have a shot at the BL.  900k would have probably gotten a defensive IFA.

I wonder if people start taking the MikeT23 approach to the draft, and only rank a few guys, if ranking a few more will net me some defensive late round draft picks that I will have exclusive rights to, and not have to bid on the IFA market on.  Hmmmmmm.

If they take the MikeT23 approach, they'll rank and sign defensive specialists who can't hit a lick.   80/80(PP range/glove) or 75/75/75(C AS/AA/PC) gets you ranked.

FWIW I spending a few dollars here and there to keep my minors stocked with respectable players.  Ideally I want all of my minor league teams to make the playoffs, so my prospects get that extra ratings bump that comes with a run to the world series at their respective level.  I'll likely dip into tryout camp players to add a warm body or two to my rookie league team at some point when i'm a bit thin, but i really doubt i'll be using that feature all that much.

STFU.  You've been at 0/0 Coll/HS scouting in MG for 4 consecutive seasons.   What you're doing at the minor league level is irrelevant.

IMO, MIke is 100% correct in identifying the likely unintended consequences of position players in the prospect pool.

My plan is to do exactly as Mike describes.  Load up on prospect pool players as soon as I can to save money.  I'll sign draft picks that I think can help my MinL teams reach the playoffs, but not the rest.

WIS obviously has VERY limited resources to dedicate to HBD. IMO, it would suck if they invested any of those into reprogramming the draft while there are so many aspects of the game that are broken and that have a lot more impact than the quality of players in rookie league.

Development / projections / advance scouting budget suck.  Anybody who's spent a few hours studying the game knows to put ADV low and save your scouting projections.  Everybody develops the same way.  Even DITR, once they get their boost, fall into the pattern.

IFAs should not ask for contracts that reflect their value.  Low Int Budgets see fewer players, but they are pretty sure who the good ones are.

In a game where all teams are given the same budget every season, compensation draft picks just keep the better teams better and keep penalizing the lesser teams.  It looks like MLB is going to change that system very soon. Hopefully WIS will quickly program the new rules into HBD.  That's going to cost them time & money.

There seems to be consensus that DITR should be based on merit, not random.  Exactly what merit seems to be debated.

Career MinL players who might fit as a 25th man on some team should not be asking for millions of dollars as FAs.

I'm sure everyone could add to this list or debate some of these.  Please don't in this tread.  Not the point.

I don't see any pressing need to fix the draft or position prospects right now.  Let's see how it plays out and let WIS invest in things that need fixing.

I've been making splashes in the IFA market tho.

Why do you need to save your draft projections?    I know how many guys I rank.  I only rank players who can contribute.  I rank them in order of "Who can contribute the most" to "Who can contribute the least".   WifS keeps track of when I drafted them.   Saving projections seems like a complete waste.

But, anyway, thanks for keeping 7% of your post on topic and then telling everyone else to not stray off-topic.

Bump again.   Purely ancedotal because I haven't checked the numbers but it looks like less late round draftees were signed in my three worlds that have held drafts since the creation of tryout camp position players.
