Contract Amnesty Topic

Prior to the rollover, owners have an opportunity to release the non guaranteed contracts, the 1 year 300k auto resign guys. However when an owner leaves a world they rarely do the right thing and release the unneccesary contracts that do not need to be rolled over.

I think a new owner should be allowed to release these players with no consequences for a 24 hour period while setting the budget.

Do you always speak without reading the question?

Yeah, this isn't an inherent advantage, because if you took over your old team, this is something you had the option of doing prior to the season's end.  Only now your budgets are reset.

If something like this were allowed, everyone should be allowed to do it.   No need for an alias.

This is NOT an endorsement for the suggestion just a common sense addition if it were to be taken seriously.

I can't think of a downside to this.  It's not much different than having the opportunity to decline a player's team or mutual option.  In which case, it could be handled not just on budget day, but up to and including arbitration day.

And to take it one step further, it could include the release of any non-guaranteed contract (i.e. minor leaguers), not just the $343k+ ones.

I don't think it's that big of a problem but, then again, maybe I've just been lucky with my takeovers.   For the most part, when I take one over, I'm just glad to have a few bodies to fill out the minors.   Retirements are usually a bigger problem, IMO.

I would think that allowing a new owner to a team to do something that you couldn't do if you kept the team might lead to someone dropping their team and retaking it with an alias.  To make that move for something like this would be plain silliness, so it's not a good reason why not to implement the suggestion, but it is a point.

An existing owner could do this at the end of the previous season.  Something a new owner would not have been able to do.  Which is what this suggestion is trying to address.

If you make it to the WS, you get stuck paying $300K+ the following season to all players on the WS roster you want to demote or release the following season.  Everything shuts down as soon as the WS is over, so there's no chance to make any roster moves.

If we could release or demote (if the player has options) all auto-renewed contracts before the start of spring training with no penalty that would solve the issue for new & returning owners.
