I mean, let's get real.  When you are shopping to buy something, is the fact that you have to pay sales tax going to be a deal breaker?

It's not Gates' or Cubans' job to ensure your happiness.
A very small minority of people paying at a higher tax rate to ensure the vast majority of people are better off than they were?  Cool.

Isn't there also the argument that when Gates pays at a higher tax rate, that the rest of America gets to buy more of his product?  When Cuban pays at a higher tax rate, more people can go to NBA games? Their businesses are better off?

Then why aren't they just writing checks to people who need them?

I drove to a dealer in a nearby city to save 1.5% in sales tax when I bought my truck. Imagine if the tax was 20 or 30%?

I would have skipped buying a new truck. Good thing the auto industry doesn't employ anyone.

When everything is 30% more expensive?  I'm probably finding more value in the things I need.  Yea, I'm more careful with where my money goes.

As I said yesterday, you're the only person on earth who becomes MORE frugal with MORE money in your pocket.

I remember. More money in my pocket, and the cost of everything goes up.

It's a wash because everything (new things, anyway) all become 30% more expensive.

So everyone buys everything used with no tax and they only buy new what they absolutely need.

Let's just put this in a real situation.

You and a childhood friend go out for drinks.   You're making 30k selling hammers.   He invented Facebook.   Do you EXPECT him to pick up the tab?
No.
But you're comfortable telling strangers to "pick up the tax tab", right?
Yea, he should be paying a higher tax rate than me. The childhood friend and his rich friends.
Do you understand why that's ****** up?

"No, I don't expect you to buy me drinks but I want you to pay a higher percentage of your income to fix my roads.   Yeah, yeah, I know we use the same roads but you make so much more."
Look.

If maintaining roads and rebuilding necessary infrastructure for the entire country will cost $1Billion and there are 100,000 households then the "fair sahre" for every household is 10K.

That means Wilma Welfare and her 4 kids have to shell out 10K, marky middleclass has to pay 10K, and Bill gates has to pay 10K.

If that seems "fair" to anyone I'd be inclined to think they really don't understand economics and/or math.

It is far more "fair" that Bill pulls more than Wilma for this project.

I don't think he said he was less frugal with more money in his pocket.   None of what we're talking about is in place.    Isn't sales tax capped on certain purchases?  Must have been a cheap ******* truck for that 1.5% to matter.

you will also TAKE HOME 20-30% more income. No income taxes.

If you make $60k you actually get paid $60k

Who the **** said Bill has to pay 10k?

I just don't think he should have to pay 70% of his income while Wilma Welfare pays 0%.
