Look.

If maintaining roads and rebuilding necessary infrastructure for the entire country will cost $1Billion and there are 100,000 households then the "fair sahre" for every household is 10K.

That means Wilma Welfare and her 4 kids have to shell out 10K, marky middleclass has to pay 10K, and Bill gates has to pay 10K. 

If that seems "fair" to anyone I'd be inclined to think they really don't understand economics and/or math.

It is far more "fair" that Bill pulls more than Wilma for this project.

I just don't think he should have to pay 70% of his income while Wilma Welfare pays 0%.

He pays the SAME taxes on his income equal to Wilma or Marky middleclass.
He only pays 70% of his income that EXCEEDS X amount.

Do you think those making 400K should be lumped together with the Bill gates of the country?

Not to mention the fact that more money in more peoples pockets is a WIN/WIN for the economy, the worker making less than X amount, as well as the business owners who's sales are going up because people can spend more $.

I'm not fond of lumping anyone together.

It's not Bill Gates' job to make sure more people have more money in their pockets.   If it was, he'd create a "Free Money" stand on the corner and hand out $20 bills.

Not capped, at least not in California. Saved about $700 by driving 15 minutes.

Maybe you have more of a problem with it than Bill or Mark Cuban? 

Used to be wealthy people felt like paying more was their duty and didn't resent it at all.
They were glad to give back to the country that allowed them to flourish and succeed.

I don't think that has changed much to the people who actually would be affected. I just think there are plenty who have bought into the "class warfare" mantra of the Tea Party and are against the "principle" of the idea even though it wouldn't affect them personally at all.

It makes a lot of sense.

The disagreement is how we arrive to that point.   You guys are all "Robin Hood" on the rich.   I'm not.

I'm quite sure the Bill Gates of the world give more to charity than any of us make.   Maybe you don't care about the blind, or the diabetics, or the wounded warriors, or abused animals, or whatever charity he gives to but it's doing a lot more good for the people that need it than it would if you had $20 more a week in your pocket.

I just responded to this before you posted it.

It would be interesting if the million and billioniares gave less to charity because their tax rate went up.  I'm curious if there's data that supports that.  It's a fair point.  But again, there's also many many many more Americans with more money in their pockets.  Maybe more of the average Joes would be giving.

I doubt there's any correlation at that level.    I don't think the guy trying to buy the Clippers for 2B is going to go "Oh, wait a minute.  Looks like I'm going to have to pay 10m in taxes this year.   Sale is off."

But the point remains.  I'd rather he decide what to do with the money he earned than someone else.
