So you just want to tell poor people that it's dumb to smoke?

You can do that.   Head on down to the store and berate the poor for buying smokes.   Call 'em "dumbasses" and the like.

The tobacco industry sends it's regards.

That 27.9% should be sending ME back a rebate. I've got 2 kids going to daycare for over $2000/mo I've got to pay for and uncle Sam isn't helping with that.
Are cigarettes illegal?
Nope .... Nor are casinos and lottery tickets.... But all three are a complete waste of money, bad investments. Why should I support habits I disagree with? Did you like supporting a war in Iraq?
That's why we tax people instead of relying on private charity. You don't get to decide what is and isn't worthy of your tax dollars.

Yea, educating people is stupid.

I'm all for you educating people.   Head on down to the store and get to it.   It all starts with one man.

Pretty sure you can deduct children on your taxes.   YOU should be sending ME a rebate.    I'm not responsible for you raising your kids.
At least I'm 'raising' them. I don't have a problem helping people that actually give a **** about themselves and others.
Are you?  Sounds like you're dropping 'em off for someone else to raise.
there is soooooo much wrong with your statement.

my wife and I both work (and we both have student loans to pay off for our masters degrees) - and the smart thing to do in this day and age is to KEEP your 2 jobs god forbid one person loses one ESPECIALLY when you have 2 kids and need health insurance.

As for the day care - Its $2000 for only 3 days a week, Its an accredited program with a strict educational curriculum so that we can provide them every opportunity to succeed in life. We pay careful attention to what they learn daily and work with the teachers to help improve skills (like sharing with other kids lol).

Your comment suggests we might as well send no kids to school because that's like having someone else raise them. Also I should be teaching them sports even though I suck at most sports.... instead of busting my *** off to make the money to pay someone who is actually good at the sport to teach them. So dumb.

The SACRIFICE here is not to have someone raise our children - we are doing that - but its to have someone TEACH our children. Thats what teachers are for. There's a huge difference.

I'm just giving you **** due to your high and mighty "Poor smokers need a beating" attitude.   I'm neither poor or a smoker.   But, if you've followed along, I'm not fond of telling people how to spend their money.  Now, if the ******* are on govt assistance, they shouldn't even be allowed to smoke.   But you didn't specify.

And I'm just giving burnsy **** because he's talking about educating the poor on the evils of smoking.   He really could do that.   Actions speak louder than internet words.   He might be risking an assbeating but, if that's his cause, he should be willing to sacrifice.

Needless to say, the last hour of this thread has amused me quite a bit.

smoking is just the easiest way to factually show how those under the poverty level (who are collecting welfare and not paying taxes) CAN save money but CHOOSE not to. There are plenty of other examples of how their spending keeps them poor.

Throwing $ at a problem is simply enabling. Educating is the key to soving the problem. Our gov't has it backwards.

I bet a higher percentage drinks.   Surely you don't think drinking is good for you.

No, Mike says education is stupid.

Have you educated any poor people on the stupidity of smoking yet?

Let's just put this in a real situation.

You and a childhood friend go out for drinks.   You're making 30k selling hammers.   He invented Facebook.   Do you EXPECT him to pick up the tab?
No.
But you're comfortable telling strangers to "pick up the tax tab", right?
Yea, he should be paying a higher tax rate than me. The childhood friend and his rich friends.
Do you understand why that's ****** up?

"No, I don't expect you to buy me drinks but I want you to pay a higher percentage of your income to fix my roads.   Yeah, yeah, I know we use the same roads but you make so much more."
Look.

If maintaining roads and rebuilding necessary infrastructure for the entire country will cost $1Billion and there are 100,000 households then the "fair sahre" for every household is 10K.

That means Wilma Welfare and her 4 kids have to shell out 10K, marky middleclass has to pay 10K, and Bill gates has to pay 10K.

If that seems "fair" to anyone I'd be inclined to think they really don't understand economics and/or math.

It is far more "fair" that Bill pulls more than Wilma for this project.
Who the **** said Bill has to pay 10k?

I just don't think he should have to pay 70% of his income while Wilma Welfare pays 0%.
dude, as I have said before, I dont think you understand economics.  If Wilma Welfare has less money to spend because she has a higher tax bill that is less money that is being injected straight into the economy.  Because Wilma in order to survive saves nothing, she has to spend everything that she has to simply survive.  As you go up the income ladder you spend less and less of your money and save more.  Does saving really help the economy?  Not really. It is awfully hard to live on minimum wage, and harder still to live on welfare.  And if you think that the majority of people in these situations could so easily pull themselves out of poverty simply by working harder you are crazy, unemployment is crazy, most new jobs are part time nowadays, and most new jobs are minimum wage.  The competition for the higher paying jobs is so high now, surely you know all this.  So you want to punish poor people simply because they werent lucky enough to be born a T23?  And its not even just poor people you want to punish its middle class people too!  (which I have a feeling you are part of).  I dont understand why right wingers like you cry so hard for the rich, but have little to no compassion for the poor and even for your compatriots.

You know I'm not reading all that.  You're Canadian, have an inflated sense of self-worth and aren't that interesting.   Be brief.

Mike hates education. And reading.
