This is silly and irrelevant, but McCain is much closer to his age expectancy than Obama is.

Sounds like age discrimination

I'll put it this way.   The POTUS is going to get the best "care" available.   Whether it be from Crazy Fred with his squirrel rifle in Arkansas or some age-related health problem.   I don't think there was much of a chance of either not seeing the end of their first term.   However, the left was allowed to turn that possibility into an attack on Palin while the right could NOT attack Biden in the same way.    TBH, it was an extremely smart strategy.

Even if we accept for the sake of argument that Obama's chances of getting assassinated were higher than McCain's, it was still much more likely that 70-something John McCain would die in office than 40-something or 50-something Obama.

I probably agree. I'd also argue that as time has gone on since then, the Secret Service does a much better job of protecting presidents since the Kennedy assassination. Even with the issues the SS has been having lately. Something like the Reagan attempt probably doesn't happen now.

I agree. Your 4th sentence is basically my point. IMO, if McCain was 20 years younger, the "heartbeat away from the presidency" line isn't nearly as strong.

Is it insignificant? How many presidential assassination's have there been in the last 50 years? What is the death rate for a 70 something man compared to a 40 something man?

Obama was 47 in 2008.  According to an actuarial life table from the SSA, the odds of the average 47 year old man dying before his next birthday is was 0.248%.  It rises to 0.348% by his 51st birthday.  McCain was 72 in 2008.  The odds of the average 72 year old dying is 1.96%, and rises to 2.64% by the time he's 75.  That's a significant jump.  Even with the best medical care, in your 70s, there's a chance of even seemingly healthy men dying from heartattack or stroke.  I don't think there was anything close to that high of a chance of Obama being assassinated, solely because of his race.
