The South fought the war for independence from the Union, after Lincoln made it clear that he wouldn't allow them to secede.

Kind of like what happened between the American colonies and the British 85 years earlier.

Weird, huh?

Was there a particular reason they wanted independence?

****!!!!

I forgot. We can just ask them why they wanted independence.

South Carolina:
A geographical line has been drawn across the Union, and all the States north of that line have united in the election of a man to the high office of President of the United States, whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery. He is to be entrusted with the administration of the common Government, because he has declared that that "Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free," and that the public mind must rest in the belief that slavery is in the course of ultimate extinction. This sectional combination for the submersion of the Constitution, has been aided in some of the States by elevating to citizenship, persons who, by the supreme law of the land, are incapable of becoming citizens; and their votes have been used to inaugurate a new policy, hostile to the South, and destructive of its beliefs and safety.
So slavery is why.

The Confederate flag is the symbol of the South's fight to continue owning black people.

Does this guy want to own black people?

Doubtful.

That doesn't change the symbolism of the flag, though.

Who doesn't want to own people?

I don't particularly care about the color of them but, if possible, I'd like mine to be hot chicks.

CONFEDERATE STATES OF MIKET CONSTITUTION:

YE SHALL BE ALLOWED TO OWN HOT CHICKS

Tec, what do you think the flag stands for?
6/25/2015 11:53 AM

I guess anybody who owns a Lynyrd Skynyrd album wants to own some of them wrong colored fellas as well:

"It is becoming harder and harder to find public figures who aren't suddenly on board with at least considering ditching this archaic symbol of racist insurrection. Harder, but not impossible."

Stewart pointed to one Republican state senator who compared removing the flag to "a Stalinist purge."

"Removing a flag would not really be Stalinist purge style," Stewart countered. "Stalin, what would he do? He'd probably keep the flag, but whitewash it of its associations with slavery and secession, and then concoct some bizarre narrative about, 'Actually, it just represents something lovable and positive — the kind of thing you just slap on a shirt or the back a truck.' And then he'd say this dual meaning would justify not just keeping it, but elevating it, honoring it. Fortunately, Americans wouldn't fall for such Stalinist…"
