Funny thing is that Wikipedia even provides citations.  All you have to do is click the link.

As I said I remember hearing about this story about the civilians. It was a story I heard and told.

I have 3 different, unrelated sources (no matter what you may think of them) that remember the story the same way I do.

The Time story does imply no civilian activity, but it never really states that. Of course you wouldnt mention something that didnt happen. It doesnt say that no space aliens were involved.

Again I believe the story I remember. I have looked for stories about it, and cannot really find any. Everything I find lists deaths and names the 2 people who got him. Short stuff.

I will look for books on the subject.

Hehe.  I found that source also, swamp. 

I had about a half hour last night and found at least a dozen sources.   All of them, seemingly, have a different version of the story.    Here's a news special from the time on youtube:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAET3gFy5E8   I think it confirmed there were deputized citizens with deer rifles.

I found another where Martinez claimed he was almost shot by citizens on the ground.   I found several that mentioned Crum(ex-military, head of security) as the only citizen involved. He was deputized by Martinez.  I also found a couple that said Whitman was an ex-sniper in the military and that he was using a military sniper rifle(which is what I recalled). 

I think, at the end of the day, there were probably several versions of the shooting.   Almost 45 years later, it's probably impossible to know exactly what happened.  FWIW, the news clip I linked shows plenty of people hiding but none are holding rifles.  However, there were shots being fired from the ground pretty frequently.  Could be cops, could be citizens. 

Anyway, using an instance from 1966 where armed citizens may or may not have been helpful is pretty silly if you think about it.   This isn't 1966.   A SWAT team would roll in today and have citizens firing guns arrested while they went about their job.    And, in end, it was a cop that took down the psycho.   No reason to think some armed teacher takes down the crazy in a school.

I knew that some of the 'Gentlemen" on this sight would jump on me if I said something wasnt mentioned and wanted to show that I always strive to be fair and balanced.

I wanted to keep it light so I went space Aliens.

We all know there can be no space aliens because the Van Allen radiation belt would kill anyone passing through it.
